Anyone been to speedway recently?
Discussion
Haven't been for a year or so, but with nowt to do on Easter Sunday, I went down to my local track with the old man.
It's still awesome, and I can't figure out why it's dying on it's arse in the UK. We even have a World Champion. All I reckon it needs is a good promotor, and it could be huge again. Rather like the TT needed 8 or so years ago.
The actions, quick, loud and close. The riders like a fight, and with the bikes being fuelled by Methanol you could even call it green.

I used to be a regular at the Edinburgh Monarchs and even followed them after they moved from Powderhall to the 'Little Ulster' that is Armadale (where else in mainland UK do you see kerbstones painted red, white and blue?).
I haven't been for at least ten years though after an unsavoury incident with some local mouthbreathers who hassled us (5 of them, me with wife and kids) for standing in "their" spot.
Stewards didn't give a monkeys, track official couldn't care less, letter of complaint went unanswered.
Four people fewer every week might not seem like a lot of money, but when your top sponsor is a local plumber, you can't afford to lose support.

I think that's the issue. The marketing departments at these places don't exist and it feels quite cliquey even at the RWYB days.
It just seems like a few middle aged blokes (and their sons) messing around. But like banger racing.
They need to make it a family day out to get the younger generation interested.

On that note, if anyone wants a truly relaxed speedway related day out that's a proper laugh, stick this in the diary It just seems like a few middle aged blokes (and their sons) messing around. But like banger racing.
