Anyone have one of these and can comment on reliability and how much fun they are? Looking at a 2006 with 15k miles on it.

Thanks,

Mark

Just got rid of my SMT 990 with 39000 miles on it and it was still running as good as the day I got it . The 990's don't give many problems mechanically but there are a few well known faults like the clutch slave cylinder. Some like to sip the oil but its quite normal.

Clutch slave should be replaced with an Oberon unit anyway, budget it into the purchase cost

Water pump seal is a known item that will need doing, nothing to worry about, we did one in the middle of the Sahara with a basic workshop - usually you'll notice it when the oil light begins flickering while the engine is warm and running - flickering for a few seconds after starting is fine

I've owned my 2006 Superduke since new. Now on 21k miles.

Clutch Slave Cylinder (at the motor end) replaced on last day of warranty at 8000 miles - the replacement is meant to be an uprated part & has behaved well since - I understand the part it mounts on was improved too as the flex here caused the cyclinder not to line up well & blows the seal.

Brake light switch failed last year, replaced with a 2nd hand Aprillia item which was the same.

If the water pump seal is replaced, it goes without saying change the oil & filter too as the water goes into the motor, the flickering of the oil light is partly due to the oil filter swelling up when the water gets into it.

Otherwise fit & finish is up there with Japanese stuff - some parts over engineered other parts not - ie wiring/cable ties show KTM come from an off road background.

Sounds undramatic in a good way.

Are they fun to ride?

I'm a through and through KTM fan, so all I'll say is try and get a test ride. I'll bet you a shiny penny you'll love it...

I've owned three totally unrelated KTMs (560SMR --> 990 Adventure S --> 1190 RC8) and I regret having to sell all of them except the RC8, because I still have it...

wink

How does the finish cope with year round use??

I currently use a CBR600RR as my everything bike but was knocked off last year causing damage to my wrist/ hand. This makes my CBR painful to ride for any period of time so have been looking at an upright bike.

Water pump seal is a service item and should be done at 10k service .

Great fun to ride, can be a bit slappy & flighty but that's part of the fun of it.

I have a Hayabusa for being sensible.

Not entirely convinced about the GS. Good bike for distance and commuting, good handling, very easy to ride but slightly dull and the engine feels like it's from a different age (not in a good way). An acquired taste and I'm not sure I'm acquiring it.

They are great fun, but like all things it depends what you use it for, I replaced my RC8 with a superduke and am loving it, but most of my riding is A/B roads, off to the pyrenees tonight and wish I had the RC8 fairing to sit behind for 600 miles!!
