Currently run a 1098, but need a daily. And a 1098 isn't a daily. Looking for a litre bike and on paper/pictures, R1s seem to be where I'm heading.

Question is, which one? Mint 4XV model for £3kish or a decent '08 plate for £6kish or somewhere in between? Off the road just now so can't test a handful as I'd like to, so putting it out to the PH experts!

Any years to avoid? Like the looks of underseat can models, but not essential....

I have a 2008 r1, it's been utterly reliable, it has done 40,000 miles. I use for commuting and track days,in fact one of the instructors from "no limits" couldn't believe the condition it's in.
All I can say is do it and buy a 4C8.

Mr. OCD will say 5vy and I will agree with him.

Can be ridden like a pussy cat but can be an absolute animal when required.

Where we will disagree with will be using it as a commuter. Mine was awful, too small for me and on London roads was ridiculous. Too hot and a heavy clutch.

Stunning looking bikes though.

Any of the models will do what you need, I'd be more tempted by an older one for commuting. Cheaper, no underseat pipes cooking your arse, more focused on low-mid spread of power than newer bikes.

Pretty much any blade or R1 will be good for your needs. Wouldn't touch a zx10 or gsxr to commute on, they don't seem to rack up the miles as well as the honda or yam IMO. Always look that bit tattier.

Not really £7.5k will get you a 59 or 10 plate with a bit of looking and negotiation.

Don't the early ones have a reputation for firing engine parts out through the cases though?

EDIT: I'm not being negative tongue out perhaps it's a design feature

In terms of a pure road bike I do think the 5VY is hard to beat... I have no issues commuting on it at all going through heavy traffic in Liverpool / Manchester. The clutch is fine - Scott is just a wimp wink ... and given you ride a 1098 I'm sure you will find it light.
The heat is a valid point but a de-cat pipe really helps...

Saying that I thought the 5PW (02-03) has a better road engine due to the improved torque ... the riding ergonomics aren't as good as the 5VY though.

The earlier carb fed bikes are fine but IMHO as a daily I want fuel injection but that is just me ... not to mention the carb fed ones have a reputation for destroying gearboxes and it isn't a cheap fix either.

All of the R1's up to 2006 are good on fuel too if taking it easy... I average 45 mpg on the commute.

Great bikes - I've had 3 (still got one); a 1999 (still have) red and white one, a 2001 blue one (sold) and a 2007 black one (stolen) (I don't have a clue about the 5VY etc model codes). The 2007 was a stunning looking bike, but a lot "harder" than the others. The 2000 era carbed ones are quite soft and comfy in comparison.

Never had a problem with any of them.
