Any R1 is brilliant to be honest. I had a 5vy and and I never noticed it had a hard clutch. I'm not exactly a muscle man either. Yes it does get hot in traffic...in fact it gets ferociously hot, due to the cat location.

Of I ever got another though I'd want a 5JJ model(last of the carbed ones) I think they look the nicest and have afterburner style lights lol.

Hence the de-cat mod I've done ... £89 (BN pointed me in the right direction) ... worth it. smile

My Wife actually prefers the look of Yazza's bike over mine ... but then she has always had weird taste (she married me!) hehe

I actually think the 4C8 is the prettiest of the lot smile

Great bikes - I've had 3 (still got one); a 1999 (still have) red and white one, a 2001 blue one (sold) and a 2007 black one (stolen) (I don't have a clue about the 5VY etc model codes). The 2007 was a stunning looking bike, but a lot "harder" than the others. The 2000 era carbed ones are quite soft and comfy in comparison.

Never had a problem with any of them.
1999 - 4XV

2001 - 5JJ

2007 - 4C8

5VY is 2004-2006

Mine was de-catted an I will be surprised if I could ever have kids after a ride into london on a hot day.

It really isn't that bad.

Unless you ride in shorts.

In really hot weather, I find the heat soak from the engine is far more prominent but that would be from any bike.

Never found the heat from the 5VY to be a problem. But then I tend to be hanging off the seat most of the time wink

I rode a bike from enjoyment and frankly didn't get that much from the Bike.

I preferred to polish it and take photo's of it. Nothing wrong with that.

Horses for courses. I get far more enjoyment from my MX5 than I did with either of the bikes.

Are we related?

Nice sunny Sunday and most normal people are hooning round on their bikes/in their convertibles.

Not me: I'll be at home applying the polich. frown

I'm used to fried plums from the Ducati so sure the Yam won't be that bad?

Aside from the temptation of Loon and the S1000R, this is the kind of thing I'm looking at..

Will it be a disappointment compared to the 1098? Better off looking newer?

I can't comment on the 1098, I never rode one. Regarding R1 vintage,I believe that BN on here said that the 2004-06 R1 was a better road bike than the 2007+ as it was more pliant with a less peaky engine (relative compared to a big twin of course). I think he had both.

All I'd say is that I've had my R1 for nearly 5 years now and everytime I ride another sport bike I'm thinking "why change? What more so I get for my extra £5k". It does TDs, tours and Sunday morning bimbles effortlessly, it's easy to maintain (I've learned on it and I'm an idiot) and at 22,000 miles wants for nothing.

My 2p on the R1. I'm sure a similar vintage Blade or Gsxr will do exactly the same.

Unsure. I rode for everyday for 18 months commuting and enjoyed that so I never rode so much for pleasure.

I think "Sports Bikes" aren't for me. I'd like a go on something upright.

Edit. For what it's worth, If I won the lotto, I'd have another Lava Red R1 in the garage to look at all day long.

Not just me that thinks that ... the only other bike I'd consider at present is a BMW S1000RR but for me that means spending another £4000 ... that's twice the value of the R1 and it's certainly not twice the bike (in my book) ... it does everything I need and puts a smile on my face every time I ride it.

It's now done 20,000 miles in my hands smile
