20mph limit across the City of London became active yesterday, covering everywhere in the square mile except for Upper/Lower Thames Street and Victoria Embankment.

Got stopped by a very friendly CoL plod this morning who politely reminded me that this is now the case - they're out in force today with radar guns so you've been warned...

Hmm... I wonder if they check cyclists, I could break that limit on my bicycle easily biggrin

I drove through it late on Thursday evening, didn't realise it hadn't taken effect yet as all the road paint and signs were in. During the day when lots of people are milling around then maybe fair enough but 20mph when it was deserted felt ridiculous.

Thanks for the heads up OP, I don't ride in the new 20mph zone normally but usually on Upper Thames Street currently (preference for a mostly north of the river commute right now). However there always might be a time where I have to divert through the city for some reason.
Last time I got pulled over by a bike cop was on a street in Southwalk which had become a 20 zone despite having been 30 quite safely for more than 10 years I'd been using it. For Southwalk its the fact its certain roads only some of them with A Road status too which makes things even more confusing.

Because the City ends there?

I use Southwalk bridge most days.. I'll be specifically looking for those speed limit change signs there tomorrow.

Shows they've adding what I'd call far from from a properly fixed speed limit sign.

The CoL are fking idiots for introducing this. All I can see that will happen is that all the bridges this scheme encompasses will get clogged up quicker than they do now, take longer to clear and impact on all the roads approaching the bridges

Why exactly are they introducing this? No doubt to protect the Darwin candidates that try crossing the road with their heads down txting m8's

During the day most of the roads don't get above walking speed; this is completely unnecessary - especially at night.

Utterly stupid.

Upper/Lower Thames Street must now be one of the few places in the country where you can easily go 5(+)X the given speed limit, surely.

On an unrelated note, there are no speed cameras inside the tunnel next to Blackfriars, are there...?

Nope, but about a month ago, and for a few days, there were policemen with radar guns doing speed check either side, mainly in the morning.
Ask me how I know...

I did not have a clue, so glad I've read this.

I suspect this is something cooked up by Boris/ City of London, not the plod. They will have a hard time policing it unless they stick in a whole load more average speed cameras as per Tower bridge and Lower Thames street.

Will have to be careful, luckily most of my commute is south of the river.
