Bit of a rant more than anything,

I've not had bikes for a couple of years now and thinking of getting another, but, what annoys me is:

Bikes I've owned/considered owning in the past - exact same model/year/mileage etc, now go for hundreds of pounds more than a couple of years ago? And they're older! This can't be just inflation, so are bikes going up in price due to demand from more people passing tests and fuel costs/insurance costs of cars driving more people to bikes?

Just curious as the idea of paying more for a worse condition version of something I used to have doesn't appeal!

Also I see a lot less bikes for sale on PH these days?

Also the amount of bikes with damage is crazy! A lot of careless new riders out there I guess?

I was hoping to find something for less than £2k but now it looks like I need to push it closer to £3k just to find something that isn't covered in damage.

I don't know what you're looking at, but when I was a student about 10 years ago, I used to want things like your standard sub-£1000 throwaway bikes of the time - XS650, Airhead BMWs, CB750, 2 stroke triples, SR500, etc. Even the odd BSA or Triumph could be got for less than £1500.

Now because of the new wave of café racers, the prices for these have rocketed! At the time I bought a late model CX500 in good condition for £650. Now you can add a grand to that!

I'm not in a grump because what I like has been appropriated by hipsters and wot-not. They're going to be the next generation of bike fans who like to tinker with these old things. I just wish they'd not pushed the prices up of things. I couldn't afford an XS650 when I was a poor student. Now I've worked hard and got a good job, I still cant!

Simple fact: NEW bike prices have risen over 30% on the last few years... this has had a massive knock on used prices as a result which means even older bikes are still worth good money.

I think we're pulling out of the recession a bit too which will only send prices up, people won't be as desperate to sell up now.

its just inflation doing its thing ...and if you havnt been getting 3-5% pay rises minimum for the last 6 or 7 years then things are going to start to seem expensive to you, when in real terms they cost the same or less frown

a £5000 bike in 2008 adjusted for inflation is about £5900 now ...

Soooooo does this mean I can charge more for my SV rofl

I have noticed prices being a little high, but it also depends on the time of year. Prices seem a little lower in winter - not much, but there is a trend.

How does it go?

Perhaps, people are taking on less debt, there's a few more new riders and consequently second hand prices are strong? The weather must contribute help too. There are certainly new bikes coming out which seem good value, especially compared to some of the large RRPs seem in the last few years. Bikes like the FZ8 actually dropped in price.
2 reasons for that MT-07 and MT-09.

The past 5 years have seen [new] bike prices rise to a level that makes them poor 'value' compared to cars - as a means of transportation.

In terms of petrol fueled adrenaline and fun, bikes still walk it against cars. Even at 20k new.

Exceptions to this, however, are bikes like the Superleggera. At 55k it is poor value - in terms of both transportation and adrenaline vs cost.
