A couple of weeks back I got pulled on the Blade for excessive speed on an NSL DCW, with pretty light traffic. I didn't really have a leg to stand on as he recorded my average speed whilst following, so held my hands up and apologised. We spent quite a while talking in his car and he seemed like a genuinely nice bloke (unlike my last encounter with the law 20 odd years ago). He actually complimented me on my lane positioning, indication, and smooth non-agressive riding but couldn't ignore the fact that I was a fair bit over the limit (95). Anyway he gave me 3 points and a fine rather than a date in court which I was grateful for. This morning the dreaded brown envelope dropped through the door, and I was surprised to find I've been given the option of a 'RIDE' course.

Having spent a while on google I found this description:.

driver-improvement.co.uk said:
This Scheme is designed to address the behaviour of those motorcyclists whose riding could be described as thrill or sensation seeking and also those who by the very nature of their riding could be defined as anti-social or careless
I'm not going to look the proverbial gift horse in the mouth, but this doesn't seem like a particularly good fit under the circumstances; I was certainly not thrill seeking, I was simply a bit late getting home from work and in truth I wasn't going that much faster than the rest of the traffic. I'm guessing there must be some cut off point for the standard speed awareness course which I didn't meet? Has anyone been on A RIDE course? Do you get treated as the social pariah that the above seems to label me as?

take the course, avoid the points.

who gives a fk, unless you have more money than a horse can st, attend, grin like a tt, yes sir, right sir, 3 bags full sir..."Oh thanks this has really taught me a lesson I wont speed again".

go out, act as normal without a £100 fine, 3 points and increased insurance costs.

its really a no brainer.

Yep.

I couldn't believe that people didn't get the idea that if you pay attention, agree with it all and keep your mouth shut you get to go home earlier. All the way through there's fkwits who don't get the simple idea that they there because they were caught speeding and still questioned the information being given. We got right to the end of the course and and the prize for the biggest thickest idiotic fktard goes to the guy who answered the summing up question "is there any occasion when it's ok to speed?" answers "yes, sometimes". Even the other fking morons groan at that because they now know we've probably got another 15 minutes before we go. Jesus fking christ almighty there are some stupid people out there.

I'm certainly going to take the course, would be stupid not to.

Several people I know have done the standard speed awareness course and I was just wondering if this is likely to be significantly different in format as it seems to be targeted toward reckless thrill seeking tts like myself smile

I'm going on a 'What Drives Us' course in 3 weeks time.

I know what effing drove me to do what I did, but I'll take the course over points any day of the week

Take the course, even though it's bullst and you should have been given words of advice at the roadside.

are you rather weak minded, easily brainwashed, are you worried you will be converted? Do you fear interaction with religions cults for this very reason.

I've never been but I can guarantee with will proceed something along these lines

sit down say 9:30 as these things never start at fking 8 like the rest of the male working world who doesn't work in IT or insurance

listen to the tripe about the building, who they are, OH are there any smokers, cough, toilets are here, blah, blah, blah kill me already

introduce yourself, hi im MTB and im a speedaholic

say why your here, listen to other wkers

find out the perils of riding too fast

lunch, if your lucky it will be some sty sandwiches with fking mayo in every bding one, some st plain crisps and a few sausage rolls

next they will show you some videos of crashes, photos of injuries, you might even speak to some victim of speeding

they will ask how you feel now, "oh mortified, I never realised doing 100 on the road to oban with not another car in sight was so bad"

a round up about how speeding is like firing a loaded gun into a room full of people

after smoking many fags to get through it, preferably a few co-codamol to dull the boredom you will be finished and free

So in summary, turn up late on noisy bike with shredded tyres, gaffa tape on fairings, ground down knee sliders and scuffs all over your leathers and then ask them when the riders briefing starts?

Just take the course.

I've not been on the course, but if it is like any other similar course:

If you are an engineer/physicist resist the urge to correct any of the 'facts', dubious numbers/calcs or explanation of dynamics that you are likely to be told wink

This is very good advice - At lunch I got talking about ABS to the guy who ran the course I attended; he'd made some pretty incorrect statements and I felt the need to mention them so the next time he gave the talk they'd be correct. He was so enthusiastic and happy about it, he asked me to explain how they worked in front of everyone there.

In summary, as said: DO NOT correct them on anything. Smile, nod, agree politely and try not to speed out of the car park upon leaving.

Don't know why it's 'stupid' to not go on the course.

A fine is £100 and 3 points which pushes your insurance up by precisely fk all, and the course itself costs £93. If I can put a price of escaping a morning of being condescended to by some ex-Traf Pol it'd be much higher than £7. I've just paid an SP30 fine actually.

Never mind the fine/cost, it's worth it to avoid the points. I'm currently points-free but still like to keep as much 'reserve' as possible...

Granted if I got up to maybe 6 points I'd consider the course, otherwise sod that.

I had just 3 points and then managed to 'earn' 6 in one go, funny how things can go wrong so quickly. I like as big a buffer as possible and if it means eating a little humble pie then I'm all for it...

Also add in loss of earnings for a day off work and petrol getting to the damn place.

Motorcycling should be about getting from A to B cheaply and safely for those who can't afford cars.

It should not be about excitement or enjoyment. All laws are right at all times. Exceeding any speed limit is akin to genocide.

IIRC if you had 6 points already you wouldn't be offered the choice of a course....
