Probably fair enough.

There are 3 types of people going on these courses, the ignorant, the 'fast' and the 'ignorant fast'.

Apparently the level of ignorance of much of the public at speed awareness courses is staggering .

Granted if I got up to maybe 6 points I'd consider the course, otherwise sod that.
IIRC if you had 6 points already you wouldn't be offered the choice of a course....
Fool me once, and all that.

Mate went on one. When showed the national speed limit sign him and one other knew what it meant. Most said "innit summit to do with parking"!

yeah my crash was due to speed mixed with inexperience. i hadnt long passed my test so knew everything in relation to the highway code that they were asking. felt that i was gonna get beat up behind the bike sheds for being a 'swot', or whatever the kids call it nowadays

Is a ride course different form the normal 3 pointer driving one ? I was the only bike rider in my speed awareness course.

It took 4 hours - the old duffers taking the course absolutely loved doing it....(a couple of advance driving wallys) the material was generic and simple (but so were most of the attendees - the level of knowledge/intelligence was shocking)

I think there were one/two moderately interesting points in the 4 hours. But always worth it to keep the points at bay..... can I do a ride course instead as next time I get caught ?

That's what I was trying to find out, in a very long winded way. The course description suggests it'd aimed at a different kind of criminal...

The letter I received directs me to a website to book the course on-line, but there appears to be no option to do that for the RIDE course.

This is a no brainer.

Do the course, not for insurance purposes, not for money saving reasons. Do it because it means you keep a clean licence and still have 12 points to play with. You won't get offered a SAC if you're caught doing 95 in a car, so be thankful amd play the game.

As for the comment about "loss of earnings" do me a favour. How many people actually lose a days wage for taking a half day or full days holiday? How many are true daily rate contractors. Load of bks, written by idiots IMO.

How should i know how many people are contracted? I was and so where a lot of my colleagues at my last job, we would lose a days pay for not being in.There are people who will lose money, in some cases a lot, to take a day off and attend this, its something for them to consider.

I bet they're very much in the minority. People have holidays in the main and are PAYE.

Simple answer then, don't speed.

Never had the pleasure. I tend to get caught in the line between "too fast for the course" and "too slow for court/chokey".

Pity really as they seem like a good excuse for an afternoon off work and a nap.

The course option is like having 15 points to play with. Just do it and report back!

The only reason to consider not doing the course is that the fee funds the scamera pratnersts, at least it does from the normal speed awareness courses.

So, restore the balance of the universe by treating a speed camera to a Soweto necklace on the way home... hippy

Sod going on a course and being talked to like I'm a spaz. I'm not a spaz, I'm a mong thankyouverymuch.

Besides, I'm not going to be caught slightly over the limit. If I'm going to speed, it's going to be by a worthwhile amount. That way I can go on holiday for a few months and come back to a shiny new licence.

In Avon and Somerset it subsidises the "ride to arrive" courses, apparently.

when I was 19 I skid past a give way line coming off a dual carriageway and t-bar'd an ambulance in my nova...

i got charged with driving without due care and attention and was given the option of a 'driver improvement course' or court..... i chose the course.

i was surrounded by mongs and spoken at like a child for 2 days. but hey-ho. means i didnt go court.
In fairness to The Man, as presented, this does sound like fking terrible driving.

Our points system is clever. 12 sounds like a lot when you only get three at a time, but on 9 points, one really must drive like a Saint, because one tiny error will cost you a 6 month ban (and all the abject misery that goes with it). This means that, realistically, when one is on 6 points, the driving changes dramatically to avoid being just 'one slip from disaster'. You can earn more money tomorrow, losing three points takes three years. I know which I'd prefer.

Simon.

take the course, avoid the points.

who gives a fk, unless you have more money than a horse can st, attend, grin like a tt, yes sir, right sir, 3 bags full sir..."Oh thanks this has really taught me a lesson I wont speed again".

go out, act as normal without a £100 fine, 3 points and increased insurance costs.

its really a no brainer.
Some insurers are now asking about speed awareness courses in the last x years

One, it's one insurer and that's Admiral and their brands. That whole discussion has got way out of hand.
