It is still illegal not to have them which is the point I was making for the OP. He asked for advice and I gave him facts. You gave opinion which was factually incorrect then you called me on it.

Personally the law sucks as does most French law regarding to motorcycles - don't even get me started on the 100bhp limit - just why?? Oh and I took my cheap and nasty lid to Le Mans last year so I didn't soil my quality one. Kind of makes me more at risk than I was before by using a cheaper lid!

I was stopped by Gendarmes just off the RN85 this month, was clearly clocking on but not taking the pith. He checked my V5 and licence, glanced over the bike and let me off with a "keep it down" hands gesture. No mention of any of the above, which is just as well as I had none of it with me other than docs, they were all packed with my luggage back at base camp! <blush>
