Here's one I hadn't heard off....

has anyone come accross a vehicle with an analog speedo that reads MPH but that on the same clock has an odo that reads KMs ?

Sounds like someone's changed the dial face on an import without altering the odo.

Sorry I forgot to mention, apparently the vehicle concerned is not an import....

I'd guess it's either had replacement clocks then, or someone told you a porkie.

What's the bike? There was a huge grey bike industry (bikes not officially imported to the UK) in the late 90s, and a parallel import (bikes officially imported to UK but cheaper in their domestic market) one in the 2000s. Although the one I bought parallel (new in '03) had mph clocks fitted.

Are you by any chance looking at a Harley MT350?

I looked at them recently and found this exact thing! I queried it too and then found that's just how they are for whatever bizarre reason.

Only time I've come across it though.

I know the old Aprilia rs's used to have the odo reading in kms even on the british ones, with mph on the speedos

Then either it's an 'import' or the speedo has been swapped from one that was and that had an MPH dial fitted.

My 916 was a parallel import (at £2250 less than a UK bike, it would be stupid not to) and had a km speedo and wrong-side headlight dip. Both are easily changeable but a new mph dial fitted into a kmh speedo would be cheaper than a new speedo - which way is the dip headlight beam cutoff?.

Some of the early UK 916 models also came that way but that was when Ducati was strapped for cash and used what was on the shelf, plus supply was so limited that the UK importer would take anything they could get their hands on but by 2002 things were different.

It's also possible that Ducati (or their speedo supplier) assembled it with the wrong parts, but I doubt it.

Ah I'm begining to see now ! LOL
There's no mention of the headlight dip being one way or another. Sounds like it's not something to ring alarm bells then !

Many thanks to all of you :-)

How do you know the ODO is reading in KM's ?

The dials only have a marking for the Speed, either MPH or KM/H the ODO doesn't.

Or is he riding it back to back with another bike or a GPS fitted and its clicking over every km rather than every mile ?

I personally wouldn't worry if it's an import.

FWIW the headlight dip is not that noticeable at first sight but on a 'right-hand-drive' version the dipped beam raises at the left side to better illuminate the verge, if it's backwards it will dazzle oncoming traffic.

If it wasn't an import and yet had the original (presumably MPH) speedo swapped then it raises the question of why?

Regarding it's import/UK status, you may not know that from the documentation. I bought mine new from a parallel import dealer and it is registered exactly as would be a UK model; me as the first/only keeper, it was even officially entered into Ducati's database for warranty/recalls etc. by the Ducati dealer that did the first service - I mention this because I bought my Wife a car from a 'car supermarket' and it's V5 status showed us as the second keeper with the 'supermarket' as the first and this maybe common place for imports?.

The only Ducati imports from that time that maybe 'lesser' bikes would be the French versions restricted to 100hp, although this is easily rectifiable (eprom) and not applicable to a 748 anyway...

Maybe he realised when he was only getting 2/3 of a tank in when it should have been empty

My car (Lancia Delta) is the same. It was new/1st registered in the UK but brought in from Munich. PITA at MOT time as I always forget to mention it to the tester and they always note the ODO reading in miles when it should be KM's. It's a very good overlay! smile
