there isnt a helmet on the market thats quiet enough yet not to need earplugs for anything more than an hour or so a day of use

So just buy whatever you like thats good quality and meets all your other requirements...it will be quiet "enough" with your choice of ear plug wink

I only get wind noise because of my sunglasses, if I wore goggles I wouldn't need the plugs. They are a very quiet lid aren't they? I might find out if they do a full face for winter weather.
Davida don't make a full face.

Their leather face masks work OK in winter though.

I've go tthe SR1 and whilst it's quiet for a Sports orientated helmet (with the NRS vents closed) it's not that quiet. I still use ear plugs.

Everyones got different head/neck dimensions so whats quiet for one person might not be for another. What I can report is that I bought a Shoei GT Air last year and it's load quieter FOR ME than any of my previous Arais. The downside to the GT Air is that it mists up extremely easily (and I don't want to be using a fog city insert just to cover the early morning when it's still cool). Generally speaking Schuberth lids seem to have a reputation for being as quiet as you can get.

The best option is to talk a friendly dealer into letting you take a couple of lids for a short test ride so you can try them back to back. Good luck.

I bought one last year as well, and yep, it fogs up quickly – but only at the very edge where the pinlock doesn't cover the visor. And seeing as it comes with a pinlock included in the box, it's hardly a whinge!

S1 Pro + earplugs.

It's a big bugger though.

Schubert C3 + plugs wink

The C3 is the quietest Scuberth helmet, the flip front means the padding around the neck can be made thicker as you don't need to be able to get your head in the aperture. I've noticed the S2 is quite a squeeze to get on, some people just can't.

I also use earplugs - these: http://www.ultimateear.com/motorcyclist.php

I've got a pair of plugs from Ultimate Ear as well (had them about 3 years), but they weren't quite a perfect fit which I only noticed after a few weeks of using them. I started using the foam plugs again and my £100 pair of customer plugs just sit on the drawer unused now

I own an S2 and it is much quieter than my Arai. The only issue I have is that it can buffet around quite a bit at speed which is a royal pain in the arse. That's using a double bouble screen. I may have to go back to a standard screen and see if it works any better.

So, After trying the Schuberth S2 it didn't fit amazingly well, also I haven't heard the best things about it noise wise and then it turned out you couldn't fit a Sena to it. So I ended up buying a Shoei GT Air, which, after my HJC, is much nicer in every way. It is also quieter than before.

I have always worn disposable ear plugs and only ever owned Arai helmets over the past 9-10 years.. am now due a change. Tried the Schuberth but I don't like the fit.

Thinking about either HJC R-PHA10+ or Shoei NXR? Anyone here have one and previously owned Arai to comment?

Cheers

Can't help you with Arai experience, as my previous lid was a Schuberth S1 Pro, but I now have the Shoei NXR which I think is terrific.

I don't find the noise significantly different from the S1, but the absence of turbulence, especially when looking over your shoulder, is excellent. The fit, and plushness of the interior is also very good compared to any helmet I've had so far. IAWE...

I feel like we should change the earplugs things to IWE (I wear earplugs), or IAWE (I always wear earplugs!)

If you have a Shoei with those ear hole spaces you can get little pads to go on the inside for about a fiver. Stuck some in my XR-1100 and while the difference isn't vast, it is an improvement.
