Hi guys,

Been a lurker on here for a while but decided to join in.

I'm thinking about getting a new bike...I've had my Street Triple R for a couple of years now and am fancying something different. I really like the bike but 2 years and some horrible service from my local Triumph dealer has got me looking for something else.

I love the idea of a Ducati (1098, 1198, 1199) but my head says BMW (s1000rr, HP4)...with all that said I saw a Diavel at my local dealer and loved the look and reviews!

I've ridden sportbikes and they feel ok for short blasts but at 6'3 am I going to struggle on longer distances, hence the thought for the Diavel.

Think you're gonna need to narrow it down in your own mind first as to the style of bike you're after. Everything you've mentioned has two wheels and an engine but that's their only similarities. Most modern sports bike are tiny. And I can't help thinking that if some of the bigger lads saw what they looked like riding them they'd change pretty sharpish.

Thats what I'm worried about, a mate suggested K1300s as a happy medium

Think I might need to fill the garage with a few bikes to cover all bases!

Only thing you can do is try them all I guess, I know terrible isn't it :-)

Being a big Ducati fan all I hear is great stuff about the Diavel but it's just not my cup of tea, there was a recent facelift done (within the last year) so there should be good deals on last years model if you weren't buying new.

1098 is probably the cheapest they'll be now so a good time to buy, 1198 has the bigger motor and the fancy stuff from the higher spec 1098 models - i.e. traction control, Q/Shifter.

I've got a Panigale and it's a great bike, probably the easier Ducati to ride (sports bikes), worth noting the service intervals are extended over the 1098/1198 and cheaper too.

Dunno where you are but I travel around 100 miles to JHP/Ducati Coventry for my Dukes simply because they're the best in the country, but Moto Rapido come highly recommended if you're further south.

I've had a STR for a few years myself, and when looking for a change ended up with the K1300S too. I couldn't get on with the real sports bikes (the Ducs etc) as the riding position was too aggressive, although I am nearly 50 and like you a similar height!

I also liked the fact that the BMW was slim (for its capacity) and reasonably nimble.

However...

...I still have the STR!!

My local BMW dealers are a right shower and I had all sorts of challenges just getting a test ride, let alone actually buying something.

Try a BMW 1200GS either model, you will need a long test ride to get over your preconceptions, then you will see why it's the best selling bike in the UK. It's not that fast, it handles ok, stops well, the thing is it does everything well, not brilliant at a few things but good at all.

I seem to use mine over the Ducati 848 on a regular basis, that could just be because I am old!
