Right October 2014 you no longer need to diplsy a tax disc. Having just read an article about this I am a bit confused (well at least I have some further questions/observations).

1, Are plod going to crack down even further on incorrect number plates as tax enforcement is going to be by number plate recognition.
2, Tax will no longer be transfered with a vehicle, when the vehicle is sold the tax gets refunded to the person selling. Will this effect vehicles with tax discs bought before October 2014(eg 12 months tax bought in September 2014).
3, As there is a lag with the sending of of the vehicle registration documents will you be able to ride a bike home without incurring a fine (thinking of cash buying of second hand bikes, where the cash deal is the incentive to negotiate a bargain and there is no way having handed over the cash you would leave the bike there).
4, Will this also effect adverts (probably linked to my item 2 above) as you wont be able to transfer the TAX.

Anyone wny other thoughts on this?

You can do that now, with 14-days grace. I collected my new Fireblade on August 2nd and didn't get the tax disc until the 7th.

Wouldn't surprise me - you make it sound as if this could be an inconvenience...

No I have a standard plate on my CB1300, its to big a bike to worry about the asthetics of small plates. I just know there has been alot of talk of small plates on here in the past.

Link below to the telegraphs article I was refering to.

The main issue I suppose from my point of view is whether the discs issued before the October date still transfer, as we looking at buying the Mrs her first big bike shortly.

Of course tax "transfers". The only thing that's changing of note for people not selling is that you now don't have to display the tax disc. Why is that so tough to grasp?

If you're selling then tax gets refunded to you and the purchaser sorts it out for themselves. Easy.

You'll also be able to pay monthly which wasn't an option previously.

It's a win all round IMO.

In terms of enforcement I can't really see it being any different from the current situation as they already us ANPR and presumably send a fine in the post if you don't renew or SORN.

The bit that annoys me is a seller will get the number of whole months refunded, but the buyer will presumably have to tax from the start of the month, so for every vehicle that changes hands the DVLA will get an extra months tax.

I have an 8x6 and got bummed for speeding by a camera with it. Also been collared with a 7x5 and they didn't say anything, so I'm sure you'll be alright. Well, not really.

If they've any sense they'll just abandon it entirely and take the money from elsewhere. Like what the British government should be doing now.

Wow. That'll be a real money spinner when bike tax is all of £60 a year.

Even on the most expensive car tax you're looking at £42.

Big fking deal.

That's £360 a year. The most you could double up to give to the Govt is one month, so that's £30 (360/12). If you think that matters then you're a fool.

It's a few million quid, which isnt too bad in the governments coffers.

Also, the process adds another layer of beurocracy to vehicle ownership - filling in a form or forms to be reimbursed money, before filling in another form to tax a new vehicle. It seems, to me, as a needless complication when for decades and decades the system has worked well.

As I see it, everything is electronic anyway, and removing the paper tax disc is just about being sustainable. All details are on a database, and so everything should just follow as it was before minus the tax disc.

<ahem> https://www.gov.uk/government/news/vehicle-tax-cha...

In practice, of course, it won't be cancelled until the V5C process is complete. Officially, however, it's non-transferable.

I doubt that £few million will cover the cost of monthly direct debits for tax. People seriously overplay the value and impact of a £few million to a government of our size.

I don't understand your point. You think because tax is relatively low per vehicle it doesn't matter? What about when you collect it 35,000,000 times then?

Even though I pay it in full lets see what I could spend £30 on instead

fags - 4 packets
haribo - 30 packets AT LEAST, unless I go to the local common wealth cousin shop he's a robbing bd
kia-ora - 60 litres of the stuff, I could bathe in the stuff without needing to add water
football - 2 games
petrol - 24 litres of the stuff
chocolate gateaux from Asda - I could buy 30 of these that would last me 90 days

I am however in awe of how well you're doing in life though.

So every single car gets sold every single year. Get real. So elf those will be zero rated too so discount them and the ones at £30 a year

Everybody is massively over playing this.

If you sell all 3 vehicles every year then you'll be £30 worse off each year. If that's life changing then you shouldn't have three vehicles.

I'm clearly not in awe of how you are doing in life, or is just standard tightfistedness so beloved of the Jocks?

If you pop down to Loon's and wait for him to have a dump you will be able to bathe in the £50 notes he has just shat so panic not.

I'm off round to prune his money tree later.
