FFS. Tax on your current cars / bikes transfers j to the new system. Ie you don't buy a year now and the have to buy another year in October. That's what I clearly stated if you'd bothered to read my post.

@Prolapse and MTB. I was ways talking about the potential extra month as that's where so wine suggested it'd be a real money spinner. I got called a moron too in double quick time wink

Quote the OP and it reads in context. He specifically asked if tax he buys today "transfers" to the new system. Hence why I put it in inverted commas.

EDIT: I see what you mean. Either way. There's fk all impact if you've just taxed you car or bike and are happily carrying on owning it. You can of course choose not to display the tax disc

Maybe I'm a cync, but I saw this as a prelude to roadside cameras auto issuing FPN's... You can do that via ANPR, but not by small round paper discs.

I'm with you, I've been saying for a while that most of the infrastructure to charge per mile, auto speeding fines etc. etc. has been in place for several years, just look around on the roads.

Perhaps we'll just see all vehicle sales take place around the 1st of every month? That'll fox 'em...........

Sorry for any confusion I was refering to the sale of a vehicle with a paper tax disc on it after the October change over.

I agree the cost of the proportion of the month lost is not huge if the tax is redeemed and there has always been the issue with part months tax with the purchase date of a vehicle from a dealer when its not at the start of the month.

Where it has more impact and is worth considering are where a current car add says for an old BMW X5 petrol on £450 tax '£1,500 with 11 months tax' but if sold after the 1st October will actually be worth £1095 as the tax will go back to the seller, this may catch the buyer out especially if the disc is still on the car.

If a car sale is on or before the 30th September will making sure the V5 is dated correctly save you the £450, presummably yes as the transfer is before the start of the new tax regime!

And on teh tail tidy smaller number plate issue, ny 6'5" 16.5 stone frame prefers the bigger plate as a small one would make my rear end look bigger

You've missed the point again. If the X5 has 11 months to run on a paper disc then the 11 months stays on it unless the seller actively removes it. Once we get past Sept 2015 then this all becomes moot and tax would not transfer to the new owner then.

Loon R1,

Thats not what the articles I have referred to and the official goverment link shown by 'Marshalla' advise.

To support this I have copied extracts from the government site and shown them below:-

'From 1 October 2014, the paper tax disc will no longer need to be displayed on a vehicle windscreen. If you have a tax disc with any months left to run after this date, then it can be removed from the vehicle windscreen and destroyed. Customers with a Northern Ireland address will still need to display their MoT disc.'

'Buying a vehicle

From 1 October, when you buy a vehicle, the vehicle tax will no longer be transferred with the vehicle. You will need to get new vehicle tax before you can use the vehicle.

You can tax the vehicle using the New Keeper Supplement (V5C/2) part of the vehicle registration certificate (V5C) online or by using our automated phone service - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Alternatively, you may wish to visit a Post Office® branch.

Selling a vehicle

If you sell a vehicle after 1 October and you have notified DVLA, you will automatically get a refund for any full calendar months left on the vehicle tax. '

There appears to be no run out of the existing tax discs just a straight abandonment from the 1st October!!

Basicly I think in this instance I think you are wrong!!

Well I live and learn. Thanks although not planning to sell any taxed vehicles any time soon anyway.
