A mate asked me to repair his engine sump threads on his KTM dirt bike(I helicoiled his old one few years back) but this one seems a lot different I think the threads are 17mm - 1.5, does anyone have any experience of this before or know of any different solutions, thanks

Tell him to stop stripping the threads!
It doesn't really matter what the original thread was as you're going to bore it and fit an insert anyway.
Timeserts are better than helicoils, they have a much more positive fixing.
