Well should I?

With winter somewhere over the horizon, I’ve been looking at adventure style bikes, cheap ones at that.
The ZXR400 would be tucked up for winter and I would still like something to have fun on.

There was a BMW gs650 local to me but that sold before I even got the chance to make a phone call. A second option is the Aprilia Pegaso 650 (carb model) there are some good looking/well priced bikes local to me.
The bike would be used for light touring (UK based) and the odd chance of taking a few green lane short cuts, now I appreciate the bike isn’t going to be fast but I think it would do both the above well enough to keep me happy.
My 100 mile tank range on the ZXR gets a bit annoying when out for the weekend, 200+ mile on the Aprilia would be much more suited.

Has anyone owned one & can offer advice on what to look out for or maybe even offer suitable alternatives?

I’m still under the new A2 license so can’t be buying big stonking 1200cc engine bikes….just yet.

Thanks

I have no idea about the Aprillia however noticing you mentioned the BMW 650, was it a funduro?

I test rode one and absolutely hated it!

Felt gutless, agricultural and nowhere near as comfortable as I expected.

Capable? I expect so!
Would I buy one? Not unless it was a 3rd of the price they go for!

What sort of money are you looking to spend?

As on the other thread, we have an (x country.) fairly rare and sought after by people who know about them.

It's an absolute hoot, 150kg wet, rotax 650 (supposed 52hp) more like 37 at the wheel but it's plenty quick enough, great in the twisties and great for light green laning.

Fuel economy is stupidly good.

Ours, 07, (sought after model) was built in aprillia factory, and consequently has a few Italian electronic characteristics, like the indicator comes on if it's revved hard, and there is a cable that wears through and shorts out on the frame unless you tape it up, but they are mechanically reliable and much lighter and better than the Chinese bikes that followed.

A pegaso must by common sense have been built at the aprillia factory around the same time, so worth consideration for sure.

Some people hate 650 singles, if you come straight off a 4 cylinder sports bike, people might say they make more noise than movement, but if you get on with them, they get under your skin and are very fast across a bumpy B road with a competent rider, you just have to learn how to get the most out of the engine smile.

I ran a pegaso 650 as a winter bike a few years back.

Had great fun and it changed my view on what makes a fun road bike. Got a ktm 950 sm after that as my main bike and had even more fun! No more sports bikes for me...

The peg was one of the bikes I remember most fondly. It was heavy, slow and uneconomical but I loved it.. Technically rubbish and a cheap sv650 is a more sensible and still fun choice but if you haven't had a big single before then go for it.

Edit to add that range was way below 200 miles. I got around 30mpg
which was worse than any other bike I've had
