Hip armour, worth it?
Discussion
As title says is hip armour worth having? I'm looking at swapping leathers from my furygan set to a dainese avro two piece. Whilst shopping about it seems that dainese and a few other of the 'top' leather manufacturers don't even provide hip armour pockets. Anybody out there vouch for it being worth having?
Ive broken my hips and have replacements ...I have him armour in my leathers, jeans...every pair of trousers I wear on the bike
last track day I had a lowside about 40mph and fell on my hip, was thankful of the armour as without it I may have been back in a wheelchair
..its one of the most common hard points to hit and injure...if its optional for like £15 then fit it yourself...my 8 year old Dainese suit only had pockets with foam orginally and you fit the armour yourself
so yeah, hip armour is worth it.

all my leathers and jeans have pockets for the armour
otherwise you can buy underwear shorts with it built in...I think Knox, Dainese , Forcefield, Spidi...all have underwear suits with armour

A broken hip is, I think one of the worst injuries you can have for getting back on a bike afterwards.
Its funny saying its an injury that old people get but I suspect its the same for young and old so I would say get it if you can.
James Ellison was back on a bike last weekend exactly four weeks after breaking his hip at Brands, yes god physio and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy no doubt account for a lot of that speed by 4 weeks is still pretty darn good. Its funny saying its an injury that old people get but I suspect its the same for young and old so I would say get it if you can.
Having said that, away from the track and on a quiet country lane without immediate medical attention it is a real risk of death from broken Pelvis or Femur either often referred to as "hip" internal blood loss from this injury can be considerable.

as where when I damaged my pelvis playing football admittedly I snapped some tendon thingy that was the main problem, I had one pathetic session of physio through the NHS, they gave me a sheet and sent me home.
over a decade later I still get pain from it, especially on track days and leaning off a bike.

When I "broke" my pelvis it was virtually cracked in 4 pieces and it took 2 operations with metal strapping and bolts to piece it back together. 6 months in a wheelchair and then learn to walk again with a frame. 6 months later the joint pain was too much and a leg length incorrect, so back in again for total hip replacement, and another 3 months getting going again
A cracked pelvis and 4-6 weeks rest is about as lightly as you can get off with such an injury. At the other end of the scale the mortality rate for hip fractures can be 30% or more depending on age and fitness level...or if you have internal bleeding then it depends on how fast people get to you ....

I snapped the neck of my femur off from the hip. it took 4 months of daily physio for me to get back on my feet.Having said that, away from the track and on a quiet country lane without immediate medical attention it is a real risk of death from broken Pelvis or Femur either often referred to as "hip" internal blood loss from this injury can be considerable.
I have had compound spiral fractures of both legs, top and bottom, punctured arteries, crushed foot, broken toes, heel, ankle, arms, shoulders, rotator cup collar bone's and a broken neck.
The hip hurt the most and still does
