It was a helmet that can be broken into two pieces in case of emergency removal. It means the helmet can be quickly removed by one person with no strain being placed on the neck and no additional movement of the head or neck being required.

Alas, "MARGARITO RANGEL" and "ALONSO ZAMORANO JUAN" beat me to it by patenting it in 2012.

They were so convinced it would save lives they decided to patent it for 15 years so no one else could use it.

God I love capitalism.

I have nearly 20 patents to my name. It does not need to be that expensive in the early stages. In fact it only costs £100 to file a UK patent application, and that gives you protection for your invention from the day you file it IF you then continue through the process to get a fully granted patent - which can take years and a good chunk of cash.

My advice would be to first search the patent data bases to see if the idea is already patented. Unfortunately most good ideas have been had before and protected via patents. Many companies patent inventions that they have no real desire to commercialise simply to stop anyone else doing it.

lots of other search databases out there too. It is a very complicated field unfortunately.

Start by typing crash helmet in to the search page and you will get a feel for what may be out there. More specific search terms will yield more targeted results.

Enjoy!!
