Hi,

I'm 26 and looking to get my licence. I used to ride off road a bit (wr450) but have never ridden on the road.

Can anyone recommend me a decent instructor in the Bournemouth area whos also reasonable on price?

From reading around I expect I will need 3-4 full days (probably 4). I'd say I have ok clutch control, reasonable balance and a general understanding of most stuff but would need some decent tuition to pass. I have been driving cars for 8 years.

Cheers!

Let's Ride are very good albeit in Wimborne. Great instructors and nicer bikes than many. Completed DAS with them during July/August and would highly recommend them, passed both modules first time too.

It's further out the way but I gurantee it's worth it.

On the road motorcycle training at Sturminster Newton (North Dorset) is a one man band run by Richard White.
No affiliation other than a very happy customer. Reasonable prices and from the outset he had the plan of "i'm going to teach you how to ride not how to pass a test".

Not only that he's flexible with learning and arrangements and also he teaches you advanced techniques while doing the regular training.

Lastly when I was taking my test (mod 2 in January 2013) he said he hadn't had one of his trainees fail since the previous July. How true it is I don't know but I believe him.

He's a fantastic bloke who is just a massive biker at heart, he owns something like 30 bikes or so.

Slightly further than Toms suggestion, but Maverick Training, based at Blandford Camp, but believe they may do training in Verwood.

Mike was fantastic, very helpful and nothing was a problem. I've completely forgotten the other trainers name, but he was fantastic as well.

I did a taster session in 2010 with them via Ride On, and my CBT/DAS in 2012/2013 with them.

Thanks for the recommendations, I dont mind driving to find some decent tuition.

I'll give them all a call but any advice on what you think 3 - 4 days inc cbt and tests should cost?

Thanks

£650 to £750 including the test fees, you will need the theory on top of this about £35.

You will need to book this and pass the theory before the MOD 1 starts if I remeber correctly.

Theory includes Hazard perception element, loads of App's available that are fine for getting you through these, just keep doing the practice tests and videos.

CBT direct to MOD 1 should be quite straight forward if you have good bike skills as very similar manouvers just a bigger bike and the swerve test added.

Road riding its learning the test requirements but if you are competent on the bike there should be time to include a few more advanced skills in 2 days training.

I would guess you'll need 4 days since the CBT will take one of those days. You might keep it down to £600 but could be closer to £700. Given its out of season and you're speaking to a number of schools, no harm in asking for a discount.

You may well find cheaper but as others have said its as much about giving you skills to be a good rider who stays alive rather than just capable of passing the tests. Also worth spending the money to be on a decent bike rather than something ropey. The 2011 Yamaha XJ6N I learnt on had reasonable poke and ABS, without it I think I would have locked the back brake on my Module 1 emergency stop (just way too nervous) and failed...

I can't remember the exact figure but I don't think I spent anywhere near £700!

Although I did my tests on a 125 so perhaps it made things somewhat cheaper.

Irrespective of which I had a lot less experience than you and did CBT (most of a day) Mod 1 training (a morning) mod 1 test (a morning again) mod 2 training (a day) and the test (again a day).
