No its not a new law that has been passed, but maybe it should be??

Within 15 minutes of riding this morning I passed 6 drivers all catching up on e-mails/texting. Maybe 7 points would make them think twice about doing it as your second offence would mean a ban.

I'd vote for that - no-one seems to take it seriously at the moment.

It's the weaving about in slow moving traffic which always gives it away.

I have been known to pull up next to people and give them a polite "Get the fk off your phone shout"...

They all look bewildered as if they are doing nothing wrong and i am incompetent for suggesting using their phone whilst driving is against the law or something? confused

I went past a hipster (fking hell I hate hipsters!) on the M62 a few weeks ago. Weaving around in the middle lane with his right indicator on. So I leave him a gap.... nothing... so I go past and the tattooed tt is texting! I beeped at him and was treated to "the finger". What a beardy .

Wait until it starts linking the phone with the entertainment system's touchscreen so drivers are able to click on the link they're mate just sent them to go and see the latest cute kittens video.

It's going to be terrifying.

You be a bunch of idiots.

It is/was always possible to make a phone call while driving. It was legal in this country ten years ago, and its still legal for the majority of the driving world.

Its just the people who are incapable and weave all over the road that cause the headlines, which cause the laws. And then after the law has been in place for a number of years thread like this are produced to vilify anyone on a phone because its an easy thing to do.

You've stopped questioning a law and are happy with the lowest common denominator driving level.

Made all the more interesting as BB is continually complaining of speed limits made ever lower for the self same reasons.

Not sure if serious. Texting while driving is monumentally stupid and dangerous.

I sort of agree with you. Making a phone call isn't that much different to talking to the person sitting in the passenger seat, but phones are now more like small computers. Texting and operating facebook etc., isn't really compatible with driving. Then again, neither are full featured 'infotainment' systems, but they're legal. Heck, there's plenty who can't drive without any distraction anyway, so there's no simple answer.

Wtf is a hipster?

Talking on the phone, easy. Mind you I use speaker phone and shout.

Texting, looking at ph is best kept for traffic jams.

The UK has one of the lowest road traffic fatality rates in the world. It's a factor of 3 less than places like Turkey and a factor of 8 less than most developing countries. The UK fatality rate is also lower than it was 10 years ago.

Just saying.........

Not at all - I have never mentioned being on the phone - before it was illegal I used to use one if it wasn't interfering with my driving. Texting is another level. I personally don't really mind too much about phoning, or for that matter drink driving. I'd rather share the roads with people who had drunk five pints of lager than who were texting and trying to hide the phone on their lap.

They're everywhere, like a spreading syphilitic chancre.

They're skinny metrosexual types identified by the following

- beard
- tattoos (often full sleeve)
- skinny, too short jeans
- plimsolls
- man bag
- sometimes a beany hat
- some may sport a too-short t-shirt
- facial expression of disdain
- think they're trendy and "alternative"

I'd love to stick the bds in a bar full of pissed up submariners (ie. the sort of people who have real beards and tattoos).

You must have seen them, here is one...

My post isn't about the use of a handsfree device, it is about emailing and texting whilst driving.

You be the idiot!

Are you taking the piss? Making a hands free call is vastly different in terms of attention required. When you're making a hands free call, you can look at the road and keep your hands on the wheel. When you're updating your Facebook, you can neither.

The issue isn't just texting whilst driving per se.
The issue is the physical holding of a mobile device, which may mean you are texting, it may not.
Hard to enforce really unless every copper is at your window and has hard evidence of you actually texting.

Better handsfree technology is the way forward, with better mobile phone integration to the car so you don't have to physically hold the mobile. Good to see that many car manufacturers have signed up to Apple's CarPlay or Androids Auto, as I think both are the way forward

https://www.apple.com/ios/carplay/
http://www.android.com/auto/

Even now, I am able to 'read' (listen to) and reply to texts whilst riding the motorbike using Siri, so full control is maintained on the handlebars.

Should add> there are some functions which should be disabled whilst the car is in motion. For example, my car has a TV in the dashboard (you can watch all Freeview channels), but the image automatically turns off once the car is above a certain speed. When the car comes to a stop, the image automatically comes back on again.

The same could apply to CarPlay or AndroidAuto.

I spoke to a bike copper at the lights this morning and asked what line the police take on the use of phones. I made no reference to texting but he immediately replied that he's constantly looking in cars when filtering past stationary vehicles and he takes no prisoners should he find anyone texting or e-mailing.

The trouble is, they can't be everywhere
