I've found the to do list :
Swap and balance the 2 tyres
Paint fork legs
Change fork oil
Strip, clean and rebuild the 3 callipers
Remove alarm ( works perfectly but I can't get a spare fob with no paperwork )
Replace the hydraulic banjos
Paint the side and centre stand
Balance the carbs
Mot

I reckon that's 2 days work, so I'll crack on. Tomorrow
Worth a good look at the centre stand as they tend to rot from the inside out!

Still a great thread and kudos to you, it's making me miss my VFR again!

Is that a CX500 I see?

It is a CX. Great old bike. To be honest, this is more my era of bike. I sold the fairing off it which I now regret.

My CX is ready for the road ( apart from mot ) but is blocked in the garage by my Saab. Which I've dismantled.

I did have a notion to customise it and look like like a hipster, but I would've just looked like a bearded tt.

Great thread, only just seen this, a fellow VFR 750 owner bounce

Still need to get to the bottom one why I ony have 3 & 1/2 cylinders frown
Dakkon, I'm definitely no expert and I'm sure the likes of Steve Bass on BN would be more qualified. I tend to think poor running is down to fuel or ignition.

These were the first multi carbs I stripped and it was fairly straight forward. I'm sure I posted pictures last year of them.

If it's a electrical fault I would start by swapping over components and see if the poor cylinder moved.

Of course it could be a compression / valve fault. In that case don't ask me!

Cheers Tom. The only problem with my to do list is I keep adding to it. The bike only needs tyres and a mot. I think I enjoy fixing them more than I do riding them.

Got the Givi pannier brackets painted, they're a right good colour match for the rest of the frame.

Tyre levers and rim protectors arrived from eBay so decided to change the rear tyre. Was very hard work. The old tyre was 15 year old. The levers are 12" long but longer would be better. The rim protectors also started to break up. I'll use fairy liquid as lube next time too.

Anyhow, new rear Michelin road 3 fitted ( £170 from tyre leader ).

Maybe get the front done tomo then I can get them balanced and fitted.

Just out of curiosity, why have you replaced bolts with hex bolts, is it a style / aesthetics thing or is there a mechanical / practical benefit?

Dakkon, I replied earlier but it never posted. I can't remember but probably due to my love of tat. I don't think my bike has ever been diy'd so I doubt it was due to the screws / bolts being rounded.

Tried to remove the front wheel today so I could get them both balanced. Even using a car jack I couldn't get the bike stable enough so I'll get them done st different times.

Took off the rear shock linkage, removed the seals and collars, cleaned and regreased.

Removed the side stand and started to paint it.

Gave the exhaust a quick coat of vht paint. It was very rusty so it's a bit tidier now. I think it's mostly hid behind bodywork anyway. If I keep the bike I'll probably change the exhaust in the future.

Last thing I got done today was to remove and strip the rear caliper.

I quite enjoy stripping callipers. Seals removed and cleaned up along with the Pistons and reassembled with red grease. I'm sure I bought these pics in a pound shop. New bleed nipple and banjo bolt fitted.

Will try and get the rear wheel balanced and the side stand painting finished off tomorrow .

I know this thread is full of boring bits but I'm using it to keep myself up to date with progress.

Local bike shop ( Jim Allan Falkirk ) balanced both wheels for a fiver. Pretty fair.

Bar ends fitted

I spent most of yesterday on the bike but not a great deal to show for my time. Concentrated on the near side cleaning and refitting all the parts I had removed. Suspension linkage refitted, chain cleaned and adjusted, rear hub finished. Took the nod plate off and saw the Scott oiler for the first time.

Fitted the rear calliper

Went to bleed and both reservoir screws just spinning. Had to drill the heads off. I'll try and buy new bolts today

I never painted the calliper while it was off and it's now starting to bug me. I've never cared in the past about this sort of thing. I'll resist painting them gold if I do. Hoping to get another few hours done later today.

Smack and Renn, thank you.

God, what have I become. That rear calliper was gnawing at me, so I removed and after some serious maskin ( no g ) painted it. I'll get another couple of coats on it later today. Definitely not painting the fronts tho...

Got the side stand bolted back on. It has a plastic cover to hide the stand but the mounting lugs are broken. I think if I can find long, very thin cable ties then that'll sort it.

Repaired the rear reservoir. For reference the sizes are M4 X 50.

Lastly, bought this from eBay. Getting to the front valve is tight so I'll keep this in the tool pouch.

Like yesterday, I'll only manage an hour or so but I'll try and get some odds and sods out the way.
