How dangerous are bikes?

I went to a talk from an ex crash investigation officer (it was really interesting). He said that statistically you are less likely to have an accident on a bike than in a car (ie if you get 100 cars and 100 bikes more cars will crash than bikes) he said this is likely to be because motorcyclist are far more aware and due to their size have the ability to escape danger...
That's interesting - I didn't know that, but it concurs with my gut feeling that I'm less likely to have an accident on the bike because my options for avoiding danger are much greater. DaveH23 said:
Bikes are 100% safe if riden within your limits.
Id say rider error or other traffic not paying attention is when accidents happen.
I would say that you can be riding well within your limits, but if someone pulls out of a junction into the side of you, there is nothing you can do about it. Id say rider error or other traffic not paying attention is when accidents happen.
I crashed about 4 times last night on my motor bike...the sides of the chalk pit are very slippery when damp at 1am!
Also did a proper balanced endo on the teeter point riding over a fallen tree on a steep down hill - the rider behind mentioned that he heard the frantic revs to get the back to rotate down and thought well played, little did he know I was just praying for it to go back down and not send me fully over the bars.
Still here to tell the tale.
