Thoughts on rear sprocket change only?

Change just the rear. Some bikes don't 'like' ally rears - my 916 has had one on for years and it's fine but the Monster's munched through two in 5,000 miles, yet the chain and front sprocket are fine. I've now replaced it with a supersprox 'stealth' sprocket (steel teeth on ally centre) and hopefully that'll last a bit longer.
I've got a brand Supersprox in the garage actually... I took it off and bought the renthal as the Supersprox looked tacky against the wheel colour of the bike.So I've sacrificed form (and lightness) for function.
I am not saying anyone is doing anything wrong or anything of that nature. (I am sick of getting into heated discussions)
I have got 17 k out of a rear renthall sprocket on the 09 R1 and 5 years of track work on the 05 R1,
Maybe I have been lucky or maybe I am a fanny who cleans his chain to much with WD-40

My 916 has done around 12k on it's renthal rear and it's still in good shape so I know they can last well but for some reason the Monster munches () them despite being 30hp down on the 916?I have got 17 k out of a rear renthall sprocket on the 09 R1 and 5 years of track work on the 05 R1,

It does use a thinner (520) setup, combined with no cush drives in the clutch and a gruntier low-down delivery though, but for whatever reason it just doesn't work.

It's more to do with chains and sprockets wearing equally together ... So installing a new sprocket or chain into used parts could possibly cause premature wear of the components.
But tbh I've never tried it to know
It might wear quicker BUT you'll still get more life out of the chain & front sprocket than you would if you bin them straight away. But tbh I've never tried it to know

Very true ... I reckon it's good for another couple thousand miles and given the bike will need new tyres next month it can wait till then ... Gassing Station | Biker Banter | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
