Read this interview with GM. Seems like a decent bloke. Not his fault that Channel 4 is giving him so many programmes. I'd take the cash too but I can't ride a bike like GM (but I do say odd things!)
He says in his autobiography that he will ride the TV thing as long as it is interesting and what he wants to do. He has no interest in "general" tv, and i don't think he would scale to it either.
The motorcycle thing is a hobby or so he says. I think his mild aspergers/autism obviously plays a role in a lot of what he does and possible drives him to achieve - it does play a part in things that he says.

If I was a lorry mechanic with no discernible talent except for being not quite good enough to win a TT, and say strange things. I'd take whatever was thrown at me.
I'd wager that anyone who can regularly get onto the podium, although perhaps not the top step, at the TT has more "talent" than 99.9999% of the bike riding population.Do Cal Crutchlow, Bradley Smith et al also lack any discernible talent by your rationale?
Or do not gel with his personality?

Do you have a source for that? I have suspected it and I know a kid who would be so pleased to hear that. He is on the spectrum, loves bikes and cars and loves Guy Martin.Edited by SteveSteveson on Thursday 29th January 22:20

Ah yes, his complet lack of talent, appart from being a very good rider and being able to pass on his enthusiasm through tv for all things mechanical. How does that not make him qualified to do a TV show about mecanical things in general and specifically bikes? I'm sorry, but I can't see what your problem with him is. He seems like a nice guy, is interesting to watch and has not got where he is through nepotism, unlike half of the people on TV.
You've missed my point. I never said any of those things. He seems alright but I've never met him, I don't find him that engaging personally, but my point was rather that some people think that these TV series are actually beneath him need to keep some perspective. Being a good rider, does not usually pay for itself nowadays unless you're winning things, even then it can be hard.
I'm being harsh in summary because I agree with his actions. That and I enjoy taking the piss.

I like him...
Seems to be a genuine person with real passion for what he does. He's pretty awesome on a bike.
If I saw him, I'd give him a wide berth and respect his space. That's all he seems to want really. That and a BMW to have a crack at this years TT.
Liked his 100mph bike run, the bike across the lake, the box cart down hill speed record (and the crash) and the spitfire recreation and also his personal spitfire engine.
Loved the story of him revving it up at work and the engine taking off and destroying the surrounding furniture.

I have met him and he is a very shy bloke who tends not to look at you when he is talking, not at all like he is on tv. Love him or hate him you have to give him utmost respect for riding in the TT,anyone who can complete 6 laps of that circuit at race speeds deserves a medal.
He has lots of medals - silver and bronze ones McClure said:
