Old Doomy needs a regular use bike . Don't need a new , expensive bike . Have experience of ow01 , fzr600 and yzf but never owned an EXUP . I remember these being "bike of the decade" several decades ago ( lol ) and have always really fancied one . I think I've found a minter and have agreed a very very good deal depending on viewing .
Any EXUP love , experiences or tips on what to look out for on here please ?

The excitement is killing me !

I knwo BN had a couple and I had an RU, same as the one you picture...many of my friends had EXUPS as well, I loved mine, it was far quicker than the first gen Blades, even if it wasnt so nimble a handler, it was far more stable.

Yamahas of the era where very poorly built, id pay close attention to the brake calipers, discs(warped easily), the EXUP valve(seizes), wheel paint was wafer thin, the bike corroded very easily and would soon look tatty, the plastics will be brittle now irrespecitive of use and they do like to use a drop of oil...I PX;d mine at around 20,000 when the oil burining became too much..I would have another mint one thou, the earlier ones especially where a great looking bike.

I changed my tyres from 130/60 and 170/60 to 120/70 and 180/55 , found them WAY better .
Mine barely used any oil, always put in Motul 300V.

Lovely bikes.

Getting off a GSXR1100 onto one was night and day in terms of handling and comfort.

As said, wheels get shabby so powdercoat them.
Exup valve and cables need regular attention and very high temp grease.
They all use oil, some more than others (up to 1 litre every 1000 miles is considered acceptable!) so check regularly.
Valve clearances used to wear a bit by the first service then settle down and never shift for tens of thousands but it's still worth checking.

Plenty out there at the £1000-1500 level so pick the best you can find and buy from an enthusiast not a wker.

I had a test ride of one a few years back.

The tyres were hugely flatspotted, the forks pitted and gushing fluid (he put gators on it the cheeky )

Brakes were gone.

But even still I loved it. The engine was a peach. I have a huge itch for one of these. I've looked loads but they all look like sheds.

Fantastic bikes. A friend of mine had a couple and a bloke I work will still has a low mileage EXUP Genesis in his garage. I've often dreamed of owning an FZR600R.

laugh

it means the feckin thing will have brakes made out of two blocks of wood, a chain that is skinnier and rustier than my pushbike, suspension that wallows like the QE2, and tyres that grip worse than wet leaves.

Oh gents , what can I say ?
Thank you so much for the replies and the tips , I didn't expect anything on a Sunday evening . I'm even more excited now .
So I've combined my list and all the helpful comments to compose the following :

Check brakes
EXUP valve
Forks
Wheels
Corrosion
Plastics condition
Seized rear end
I hear the clutch baskets can break
Obviously I'll do all fluids , pads , tyres ( to the new sizes recommended above )
Full service
May stretch to rebuilding the forks and rear suspension at a later stage if needed

However the bike was dry stored for 13 years until the current owner bought it and most of the above was done so I am very hopeful .

Pictures show fantastic condition cosmetically but the tyres are different compounds and need sorting but bike has new chain , had service , mot , carbs soniced and set up , new clutch .

Owner is an enthusiast that just doesn't ride anymore , knew his EXUPs so I feel like it's worth the journey to the ends of the earth . Just need to hire a van and make my way down on Wednesday ,fingers crossed then job done !

Thanks again for the replies( positive and not so ) feel free to chip in if I've missed anything out or just to share some EXUP love/ hate .

Keep the pics coming too , I can't sleep with excitement .

Best

Wt

Finding every old review I can now and reading everything , it's so funny what machines can do to us .
Sure I'd love a new r1 but to be honest with you I wont track the bike ( have a bike for that) and I'm not sure I'd enjoy the r1 more on the road and I'm convinced the new r1 isn't worth 7 EXUPs ( at least not to me ).

One thing I didn't ask perhaps you can help . Pictures show a sporty riding position but not necessarily an overtly extreme one . How is the comfort on the old girl ? Quite fancy a euro tour later in the year .

I rode one 'round the block' whistle 20 years ago, it frightened the sh!t out of me... but I rode a GS550 at the time so it would.

Hugely comfy old girls, did South of France to Calais in rain/sun/rain ,with petrol stops , less than 11 hours and happily went to work the next day. Mind I was a lot younger !

Had one, replaced a 1000 Genesis, loved both of them, the EXUP is a far better bike. Everything as above is true, especially the tyres & oil burning. One issue I had with mine was poor starting due to tight valve clearances.

I think BN & Podman are wearing rose tinted specs - I repaced my EXUP with an early Fireblade which, whilst not as grunty, was far comfier, economical and faster than the EXUP, my mate bought my EXUP & we competed in local drag races together & the Fireblade is quicker even in a straight line - assume it's down to the weight difference.

OP - you say you are travelling 'down' to look at the bike, not sure how South/South West but if it's a H reg RU model with the plate ending JWL then send me a pm - mine was written off, frame mount get's it in a small fall.
