fking wish I never bothered. Leaking oil. Found it was the filter raced to Dunfermline like a man on a mission

Got a filter

Fixed the leak and it pissed it down.

Still I'm into 56 seconds now. That's 2 seconds off my hest. And I think I could go a tiny wee small bit faster.

What do people do about changing tyres on Euro trackdays?
I've got a spare set of wheels so could get a set of new tyres here and take with the bike on the lorry but my local place is quoting £220 for fitting replacements for what I have at the moment (BT016's) ! That's to loose wheels.

What are the the likes of Parkitt charging for tyres to be fitted to loose wheels whilst on a euro TD ? (Yes I have called them to ask but we keep missing each other).

Or should I be buying new tyres off the internet and just getting them fitted to my wheels whilst out on the TD?

(Basically I reckon I have 1 maybe 2 days left in my tyres and don't want to know what the best option is for day 3)

Thanks

What people normally do is take the bike out fitted with 'dry' tyres, wets on the loose wheels and then sling in a couple of spare drys (be it slicks, or proddie race tyres).

Parkitt charge £15 or €22 to fit a tyre to a loose wheel. He will steal your valve caps for some bizarre reason so take them off as well. They obviously supply tyres so you can buy them off them in advance if they are competitively priced, and get them to take the out there - confirm that the price is supply only or supply and fit whilst making your calculations. I suspect it will be supply only and you will have to add your fitting charge on top.

If you have spare wheels c/w discs then definitely take them as it means you can still be out on the bike while tyres are being changed.

If you haven't got wets on your spare wheels you could fit them with your new dry tyres bought in the UK and avoid any tyre swappages out there (just wheel changes) but Parkitt are providing a necessary service and need to make a profit.

Your BT-016's aren't the grippiest / latest tech tyre for trackdays so any replacements are likely to be an improvement. Pirelli / Metzeler, Dunlop and recent Bridgestones are the more premium brands with Avon and Continental fighting over the more budget end of the market - all will more than good enough if you are coming from BT-016's.

Anyway, trackday reports.

Tuesday I went to Oulton, it was wet in the morning and was for the rest of the day. It then got that wet it got cancelled in the afternoon.

I made my bed, went and got a pizza then spent the rest of the night bored out my tits getting pissed. Needless to say it was a st sleep. The wind howling and the rain pissing down.

It was soaking again.

I met Yoda, who proceeded to tell me how stupid my life jacket looked. I took it off and discovered how restricted it made my riding in the rain. I could now lean off the thing and wasn't getting blown everywhere. Its going in the bin.

it dried up, and in the afternoon it was rather pleasant.

Normally I pay for my photos but at £6 a pop he can fk off. I bought one at least.

It was a bit of a let down due to traffic. I was in fast and stuck behind people and I'm doing a 1m58, not quick by any means, I never got 1 clear lap. In a normal day id be getting massively overtaken in that group, I think one or two passed in the afternoon and that shouldn't happen. Became tiresome trying to work your way round s1000's, blades and zx10rs.

I was sat there in the pit getting ready to go out, when a guy who had his mates setting up his bike started to bend down and stretch out like rossi on his peg. I burst out laughing and asked who the fk do you think you are Rossi? This was indicative of the day, I seemed to be only one not using tyre warmers on my wets, even guys in novice. A lot of wannabe racers.

Seeing as the car was pack I decided to do Knockhill on Friday. I wanted to see if my gearing had made a difference so I watched the forecast like a hawk. Dry all day, less than 7% chance less than 24 hours before the day. Right book it.

it was open pit and only 30 had booked on. Some left as they had mechanical failure, many crashed in the first two hours on a freezing greasy track (was air temp of about 5 degrees and nil sun) and one got banned for going through 4 reds and doing another lap. To say the standard was mixed was an understatement.

the track didn't heat up until lunch, but I did mange to get into the 56.6s, to put that in context, that would have put me on the second row of the knockhill 600 club races, with P1 being a 54.706 in one of the races I came across on google. I am genuinely pleased with that, especially if you have seen my nearly 10 year old shed of a 675 how gash I am at times.

I had become growingly conscious of an oil leak at first I thought it wasn't anything. Turns out my oil filter had ruptured and was pissing oil, luckily the fairing caught it all it got much worse after a session or so. A stone must have hit it.

There was no photographer, so here is a couple.

I raced to Dunfermline at lunch to get and oil filter, like a man on a mission. I had to stand I a queue for 20 minutes while some tit decided he couldn't afford white wall wheels for his cruiser because his giro wasn't big enough. I raced up to knockhill, carving learner drivers up and fitted my filter only for the heavens to open just as I got the fairing on. 7% my arse hole away take a fk met office.

I fitted wets and went out, I don't mind riding in the wet but I'm not quick. I did have fun actually. You were the only one on track for most of it, lap after lap of no one. I got down to a 1m06 which is good for me in the wet, that would stick me mid of the pack in the club 600 so I'm getting better with my wet riding.

I know people will say, timing pah, but we all do it. I know it means fk all on a track day but I wanted to see how much my chain and sprocket change would knock off, 2 seconds it seems.

Anyway that's me done for the year. 17 trackdays, oulton, croft, Donnie, Anglesey, knockhill and cadwell.

Not bad seeing as I only ever done knockhill before.

Think so, suspension needs a freshen up, and a bit of bling and it will be ready to go. I don't need a litre. I'm not good enough.

Yes, in traffic, sometimes I got stuck doing 2m05. The only reason its even worth mentioning is to show how pedestrian the "fast" group was that day if I'm doing those times in traffic and overtaking most of the field.

Tyres.. sizes, choices, etc..

So, after various expoits this year, I have arrived at the situation where I have:

1) Bought an old ('99 5EB) R6 with brand new pilot roads (120/70/17 and 180/55/17)
2) Aiming to sell a ducati that currently has a pretty well knackered/nearly bald set of pirelli rosso somethings, same sizes as above.
3) A spare set of wheels for the R6.

My general thinking was to chuck the pilot roads on the duc to sell, get some 'scrubs' for the R6 in a rather sportier rubber, and sit on the spare set to see how much I use the R6 on the road - potentially have some road biassed rubber on them, or possibly some wets.

Looking around, 180/55 seems to be an unpopular size for track tyres, most seem to be either 180/60, or 190/55. I'm also a bit bewildered by the choice of compounds.

So:
1) Am I being daft/should I just get some sporty/road tyres, or buy something new for the ducati and leave pilot roads on the R6
2) if not 1), what should I be doing for the R6, does the size/profile make a significant difference to handling (upper-novice), assuming they will all fit in the first place.
3) I'm thinking more longevity good / harder compound? Given they should all be a step on from the sport/touring type stuff I'm used to

Sensible advice / rotten eggs appreciated - thanks smile
