De Cat - Why ?
Discussion
I've never removed a cat myself although I did order a De catpipe recently. I was told that on my bike it it helps with a heat issue in traffic as the cat is basically between your legs. Doesn't it free up air flow as well?. I was told to get a remap once it's done to get any real benefit.

You hear so many people go on about it just wondered what you actually achieve.
Is it one of those type of tales you hear of people talking about that they gained 25bhp just from fitting a K&N filter. In reality pretty much a waste of time ? Or more to it than that ?
The Metro GTi originally had no cat, but also single point injection. The MPi model had a cat, ended up with 10hp more or something. Is it one of those type of tales you hear of people talking about that they gained 25bhp just from fitting a K&N filter. Moral of the story, more injectors.

Why remove it on my GSXR..........?
Its ugly
its big
it weighs more than a brick
it reduces power
Why keep it.........?
Can't think of a reason
To add to that GSXR list, it rusts within seconds and looks even more ugly. Its ugly

That aside, after removing the cat on my GSXR1000 K7, along with a remap,it did gain more BHP and torque, which I was reliably informed by Mark at BSDs, wouldnt have been available if id left the cat on the bike..I cant remember the extra figure I gained now , id have to find the dyno print out but it was very worthwhile.
Most CAT's on modern bikes are built into the end can these days ... so changing the exhaust for a better noise means removal... removal means a more free flowing exhaust which in turn means a more efficient engine.
Although on bikes it's mainly due to cosmetics, weight and heat rather than power gained.

Aye mine is in the std box which is off anyway.
Just a random question really as im mooching about for a new bike, seen a lot of R1 owners go on about it. Seems the heat issue might be one very valid reason. The cat must get a lot hotter and with the pipes under the seat that can't be very enjoyable on a hot day.

The first thing I noticed after the snatchy throttle on the 2009+ model was it was like putting your crotch in the microwave after 10 minutes in traffic. Nice in cold weather but mildly annoying in normal weather. That coupled with the claims of 2 more hp/slightly deeper noise and it's worth the 150 quid I supposeJust a random question really as im mooching about for a new bike, seen a lot of R1 owners go on about it. Snatchy throttle on the 09+ R1 ?New bikes are a pain in the ass... just spent the best part of £800 sorting out a snatchy throttle on my 2011 fireblade. My 2004 R1 was smooth as a babies arse in comparison!
Euro 3/4 gumpf

I could probably live with it. But it just seems super sensetive. My main riding buddy has an 07 r1 and although it's just as quick if not a touch quicker when it's actually up in the revs tHe throttle response and low down power and the way the big bang engine spins up make the older bike feel like everything's operating in treacle in comparison. Any micro movement of the throttle mid corner upsets the bike.New bikes are a pain in the ass... just spent the best part of £800 sorting out a snatchy throttle on my 2011 fireblade. I could see it catching me out on a cold morning if I was in autopilot mode and I know a few people here have had low speed spills which I assume isn't helped by this. A proper remap I've read makes the bike much nicer to ride.

If I was doing fast road / track work only then I'd agree you can live with it ... but I spend a lot of my time riding through cities in 2nd gear, under 4000rpm crawling along through traffic at 25mph... for this the fueling is shockingly poor. This was the reason I went down the route of PC5 and custom mapping... it transformed the bike. It's not 100% as some slight surge is evident when rolling from closed to open throttle but it's not longer over sensitive to input and is happy holding a throttle at lower revs. I could see it catching me out on a cold morning if I was in autopilot mode and I know a few people here have had low speed spills which I assume isn't helped by this. The 04-08 R1's have never been known for their low end power, even with the mods I did to my old R1 the blade makes something like 15 lbft torque more from 3000-7000rpm and is very noticeable. However the R1's top end is sublime and so much more exciting when they start singing... Which is the real reason I want another for track work
