Apparently there's a simple ECU reflash available which frees up a reported 15 additional ponies. Not sure why it isn't part of the standard bike but all the ZX10race bikes here are running it with very good results. Head to head there's nothing between the new BM and the ZX so very effective
You'd have thought they'd have included that sort of power on a switchable map as standard, if the engine has the headroom to support it. Unless of course, it's a case of the bike can make the power, probably quite comfortably, but Kawasaki wanted some tolerance built in to stop them going kaput.
Not sure, but it's Kawasaki dealers who do the reflash so it's strange it's not part of the bike from the get go. There's also the ability to access the ECU and modify pretty much everything, from fuelling, ignition timing, engine braking and such.
Maybe they're holding it in reserve for future versions as a simple way of upping the power for model years

I wish that was true. Saw it at the NEC expecting to change my mind but it didn't. frown

A ZX10 costs the equivalent of 8900 here and the top step S1000RR is 12300. 1299 is going to be 15700!
Luck you !
Cost of living/average pay related ?

Really couldn't say. The ZX10 is RRP but can be had cheaper easily enough. Much cheaper if you register for the ZX10 Cup!!
But the way the Rand is taking a st bath, if they tried to maintain parity they'd sell bugger all.
But it's interesting the discrepancies between markets on like for like products.

I was thinking about the red one, but the red disc carriers are putting me off !

Red R1's are the best biggrin

Just paint the red black on the disc or get them to do it as part of the deal.

I see a couple of those Ducati's floating about around here fairly regular. They are huge, the rear tyre wouldn't look out of place on a F1 car. They strike me as a kind of a more modern looking Harley type of thing.

They are huge things - the enormous tank and engine section, combined with the short tail makes the wheelbase look a bit like a clown bike at times, imo. Still, I think they look mint and they sound absolutely snorta with the Termignoni pipes.

I really like the new R1 but completely agree with the comment on the carriers. Very tacky.

Interesting quandary you have there!

I'm off next week so I'll pop up to Bells and have a look at the R1 in the flesh ( I'll text you of you want to meet up?) - I'll be honest and say the online images do nothing for me frown

I'm not sure I'd give up your R1 for the Duc - I thought you meant 'in addition to' rather than 'instead of' but I'm sure a lengthy test ride will answer your questions.

I'm waiting for the release of the 2015 RSV4 before doing anything - I love the handling but fear they may have sacrificed midrange chasing top end power.

Just to add - the clocks look great on the new R1 but I'm a sucker for analogue tacho's - the digital ones I've had on zx10s and Duc are almost unreadable in daylight and I love the sight of a needle swinging round the gauge...maybe that's just me though wink

The GSXR is very tempting at that sort of money and with attractive finance options too. If you chucked £5k at it would it be a better bike than the R1?

R1 is also very ugly, even in the flesh IMO.

Personally my money would be going on the new RSV4. Love the noise and the way it looks.

New R1 was ripping up trees in Superstock form at COA last week, with Dane Westby (wolverine) on board, mixing it with the super bikes.

But tragically, he was killed on Monday in a road bike accident in Oklahoma.

Poor guy. Sympathies to his family and friends.

5k should get you öhlins ttx suspension, bazzazz tc and all that jazz and a pipe and power commander.

My heart says when I can to go for the Ducati - however, 1300cc (as near as damn it) and hard work clutch wise (still), ummm - I love them, but with the money, I'd go for a slightly older model and just take it out occasionally because the pain in your neck and back after 50 mins riding is, well, a pain.

I test rode an RR late last year.

it was comfy, fast, reassuring when braking, the quick-shifter was superb and now with heated grips.

The ZX10 I tried - well the clutch was fantastically light (made the Triumph's feel positively agricultural), but the front brake lever was almost parallel to the road and I couldn't see how you'd adjust it.

Nowadays, the main reason to ride (on the road at least) is to blast around, but do so, so that at the end of 1-2 or even 3 hours, I can still turn my neck and look forward to the 1,2 or even 3 hour ride home. A bit of a pose value, is a bonus

That power from the Ducati is mental....from a twin. And look at the torque from it.

Insane. That's more than a factory super bike from what, 4 years ago?

Love the r1, but I think I'd buy the duc.
Its just a shame an everyday 1299 doesnt make that sort of power.

im yet to see an 1199 with its claimed '195' over 170 on a dyno.

even on the bullst billy BSB dyno they wont top that.

Anyway, in response to BassGT3, yup, a simple Kit Software flash on the stock ecu releases all those extra ponies, and you can also then change practically everything, TC, engine braking, ignition timing etc.

Lets not get into the whole "Crank vs Rear wheel" argument!! biggrin
In the real world, side by side, there's nothing between an 1199 and a BM/ZX. If the hp were so different, the 1199 would be dropped like a hot coal in a straight up head to head on a straight, yet this never happens. Regardless of what dynos say, this is the real acid test and backsup the similarity in peak HP outputs. Problem with the 1199 is the lack of grunt under 8,so it gets it's pants pulled down getting off corners, something Ducs normally excel at. The 1199 is also a very difficult bike to ride fast, unlike the BM or ZX. Really seems to take a lot of effort to get the best from it

Yip, and head to head, a flashed ZX will stay with a BM all day long. Last race day saw 2 riders going hammer and tongs, one on a 2015 BM and one on a flashed ZX. One of the riders was an ex Goldbet Superstock rider, so no slouch. In the end, they swapped lap times until the BM just squeaked the win.

If you put 5k down you could buy a pre reg 750 for not a lot more.

I keep harking on about it but I really don't think the stock colour options do much for it. The black looks good but I think that's a us colour option only although may be wrong.
Every race liveried bike I've seen though I really like.
