I am looking to buy a bike for my son. We were going to get a Honda CRF50 for him but I have realised he wont get to ride it a lot as we live in the suburbs of the city. So an electric bike seems the best option.

Does anyone have any experience with Oset trials bikes?

Anyone know where I can get a deal for one of these puppies?

Not too sure, but am interested in why he will have more opportunity to ride an electric bike than a petrol one?
Don't you need a proper place for both?

If it were me, go for the Honda. Nothing like having a proper engine to play with, and the brakes are all in the correct place etc. Stand him in good stead for when he has a "proper" bike.

Honda is fine but can be pricey, don't discount Suzuki's version, DR70 or older 2 smoke JR50. Much cheaper and hold their value well.

Be interesting to see where this goes, as I am wanting to get my 5 year old daughter a bike and the nearest available places to ride are all an hour or more journey. So I was thinking the same get an Oset and take her in the local car park as it is built on waste land and the top tier is gravel/grass/bits of broken up tarmac and out of sight from any housing and major roads. So my thoughts are get an Oset, no noise or disruption to the locals and hardly going to tear the place up.

My son has the 24V 16.0, I brought it when he was 4 and at nearly 8 he is almost too big for it.

Great bits of kit, very reliable, top speed is about 15mph but you can dial it down to just above walking pace with the potentiometer under the seat. Range varies depending on conditions, wet grass and mud can kill the batteries in 25 minutes, dry or tarmac is nearer 45min with about an 8 mile range.

The only think to watch out for is drive chains on early models are a bit weak and constantly need adjusting or the chain can jump off the rear sprocket, they tweaked the design for later models and in my case I did away with the plastic chain guard and made up a spring loaded tensioner.

Technically they are illegal to use in public places but with them being silent and just looking like a chunky mountain bike I have never had anything but compliments from people who see him out and about.

Pricewise they rarely go much below £600 on ebay regardless of age or if it is the 24V or 36V variant, the only major changes over time are the chain as mentioned and newer models have better front forks.

Well first off the reason why I am going for electric is because its seen as harmless by the majority, where as a CRF50 will be noisy and polluting and other kids may die.

Also the places you ride an electric bike are more easier to find.

My son is 7 and I am slightly worried he is already too big for the bike, but I have 3 more kids who will enjoy using it.

my sons had the 16 36v for over a year now. its a great piece of kit and we use it all the time in the woods etc without complaint. he also also been on ACU trials which he enjoyed. Its strong enough for me to wheelie up the road too! biggrin
I got it on ebay, not the cleanest one ever and still spent 650 on it plus new plastics and tyres. They hold their money very well and especially on the run up to Xmas can be virtually impossible to get hold of.

theres a couple on ebay now from £400 which is good...

If anything its not getting a little small for him as he will be 6 soon and has already tried out the 20" 36v version so we may be looking to go to that next.

that way, I can then do this..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REeeYtp-8qE

Lots of them about and they are being modified with LiPO batteries for better range. I know a few young riders who go straight from Balance bikes onto the small ones. There is plenty of information out there on Trialcentral about mods and maintenance. They are considered pretty reliable though and they are easy to transport. Just throw in the back of the car. I know a few Lads and ladies who started on these and they are ignored by NIMBY's as they are electric and considered "toys". Just stay off roads. One of the bigger dealers is TrialsUK in Leeds. They even do the LiPO battery out of the box. Second hand there are a few out there but every one will be slightly different. Upgrades to Brakes, Wheels and tyres are most prevalent. As usual with these bikes buy on condition and how well they have been maintained.
