Sarcasm is off the chart.

Raced TKM 2/ and 4/ in the Super One national kart championships and did a year of Mazda mx5 until it made me broke.

Is kart racing motorsport.

It's a bit like picking up an action film and finding it's got Steven seagal in it.

It's technically probably is but it's just feels wrong saying it's the same thing as die hard

I have been biking since 1969, had thirty odd bikes and only fell off once at 1 mph on my brand new GPZ 900 when I stalled it setting off slowly from a road junction biggrin

Nothing injured only my pride...smile

However, one of my sons had a bike crash five years ago, when he was travelling along at 30mph with his lights on and a bloke pulled out in front of him. He was VERY lucky not to have his leg amputated..they cut his boots off on the operating table.....he now has one leg slightly shorter than the other and a big metal rod through his leg held by umpteen screws.

I could post you photos taken a week after the accident. but I won't because it would put you off your dinner..smile

Motorbikes ARE dangerous, anyone who says otherwise is an idiot, but so is rock climbing, boxing, horse riding, etc, at the end of the day, nobody can make your mind up for you.

You clearly have never watched or experienced a professional kart race, it's the grassroots of motorsport. You can't progress in it unless you have money.

Nice try at trolling though.

No I haven't. Nor have I paid to watch a Steven seagal film

In my eyes it's the same thing

Karting is very technical, I dabbled with a National Super 100 years ago.
But NOTHING with wheels will give you the buzz of carving a bend at 100+mph, knee down, feeling the back end squirm as you climb on the throttle. 4 wheels just don't come close....

The geared karts are incredibly technical! Had a go in a super 250e once, 160mph in a kart is interesting.

I can imagine, 4 wheels have their limitations that's for sure.

Sounds like you really need to convince the other half. Say that you could end up resenting him if you don't at least try it, and because you love him so much you don't want that to happen.

Or just tell him you worry him playing golf will turn him into a arrogant tosser, but you would never hold him back from what he wamts to do.

Haha! I like your thinking. Can't think of anything worse than golf, the only thing that appeals is the buggy.

Why not try some track riding? Safer than the road and plenty of thrills..

Threads like these pop up all the time.

Should I get a bike. People are against it what do Biker's think.

The simple truth is your a bit retarded if you take people's opinions on a bike forum

We could go back and forward all night and let's be honest. It's going to have nil effect on your decision.

Cant say I've ever got my knee down but what he says is correct.

My first love is cars and karting is great but nothing I've ever done comes close to being on a bike.

According to a quick Google, bikes kill 328 people/year. Booze kills 40,000. Do your folks come over all Maud Flanders every time you have a beer?

I had a mate die when he fell down the stairs, did I immediately move into a bungalow? Of course not.

Buy a bike, don't ride like a tt, do your level best to steer clear of the many, many morons and, just very occasionally get a bit lucky and you'll be just fine.

My other half Hates the idea of me getting a bike, as we both have family members who've died in riding accidents. That being said, she understands (after much taking and a night on the couch) that is my choice and I'll do it anyway. What I will say though is that you should still consider your partners words, and decide if you still wish too ride. Hope this helps.

Excuse any mistakes merlot is far too Tasty.

ETA:I've just booked my motorcycle theory

Cheers for letting me know how you dealt with it all (and everyone else that mentioned their experiences). It's a lot harder of a decision to come to than I originally thought. I suppose I can see it through their eyes too, I totally get why they're so freaked out.

My mum wouldn't let me have a bike when I could ride one so I bought one after I left home and pretty much ignored the way she felt about it. 25 years on she's pretty much got over it but I don't feel great about ignoring her feelings initially. My wife is very supportive and doesn't mind me riding as she knows I'm more careful than most. The instant she loses her bottle and starts to worry I'd sell the bike. Some things are way more important than a hobby.

If you want to do it, just do it. Weigh up the risks, and then get on with it. The seed is already there, just do it.

Don't get your partner into it though. If I got someone riding who was reluctant, but maybe thought they should do it because I do, and they got hurt or worse through riding because they thought it would make me happy, I don't know how I'd deal with that. If someone wants to ride, it should be entirely their own decision, done only to please themselves.

Let your partner play golf, and you can go out on the bike. Everyone's happy.

OP: Ignore some of the grumpy responses on here.
I expect you are not looking for us to make your decision for you but rather want some moral support (if you are looking for people to tell you it is alright to ride then a biker's forum isnt a bad place to start).

Only you know your BF and family well enough to know how they will respond. Will they object at first but get used to the idea quickly? Or will is fester and grow, always being an issue?

My OH hates bikes and I ride against her wishes. I'm not proud about being so selfish. As others have said, in the end you have to make the decision and live with the consequences.
