PH2: MotoGP round 3 & WSB round 4

Rossi spoils Marc Marquez's American dream

Like the North American MotoGP last week, the South American one also seemed a foregone conclusion with Marc Marquez the clear favourite after qualifying. But at least a stunning qualifying by Aleix Espargaro on the Suzuki created a bit of a distraction from Marc's domination.

As Marquez's rubber went off Rossi was there
As Marquez's rubber went off Rossi was there
Worryingly for everyone else, when the lights went out Marc cleared off into the distance. Would his softer option tyres last the race? Or would the Yamaha pairing's tactical choice of harder compound prove the deciding factor?

With Marc well clear a flaming Ducati provided a bit of entertainment while Rossi had dispatched with Lorenzo and was starting to close the gap on the two factory Ducatis and Cal Crutchlow ahead. Could he also bridge the gap to Marc in the final laps of the race? He had to get past the Ducatis first...

With 15 laps to go, Rossi breezed past Dovi and the chase was on - could Rossi catch Marquez? According to the time sheets he could, but that doesn't always equal track position.

Eight laps to go and Marc still had just under three seconds over Rossi but his rear tyre was looking very worn and to make matters worse for the Spaniard, Rossi had brought Dovi with him.

The Doctor back on top!
The Doctor back on top!
With just three laps to go Rossi was on Marc's rear wheel, but catching and passing are two very different things and Marc wasn't going to make it easy. In fact he made it too hard!

When he should have settled for second, Marc refuse to yield and ended up crashing out of the race when his front wheel touched Rossi's rear. The crowds didn't care, another win for Rossi and Cal Crutchlow in third.

Having removed the first race win monkey from his back, could Sam make it two on the bounce in Moto2? A poor start saw him swallowed into the pack but he soon recovered and a fierce braking move saw him up with the leaders on the first lap. By mid-race Zarco had put clear air between him and Sam in second place and the Brit was coming under pressure from Rins. A mature ride saw Sam hold on to take third place rather than throw it into the gravel trying to chase down the eventual race winner Zarco or second place Rins.

Moto3 and would it be more of the same from Danny Kent? A decent start saw him right up with the leaders and was soon heading the field and breaking the lap record. Like last week, Kent made the break and by mid-race had an enormous advantage while behind there was a hell of a fight for the remaining podium slots. Another win for Kent and a trip to American to remember for a long time.

Two podiums for Van der Mark in home race
Two podiums for Van der Mark in home race
WSB Assen
Over in WSB at Assen, the fast and flowing Dutch circuit seemed to suit the Kawasakis of Rea and Sykes and they led the field in race one followed by Chaz Davies on the rapidly improving Ducati and home town hero Van der Mark. In the end Sykes' challenge faded and Rea took a fairly comfortable win from Davies but you have to hand it to Van der Mark who held off Haslam on a Honda that clearly isn't as fast as the Brit's Aprilia.

Race two was a repeat of race one but this time it was Sykes leading the way for the majority of the race with the same gaggle of riders stacking up behind. A bit of elbow bashing saw Sykes demoted to fifth, handing Jonathan Rea the lead. That was the break Rea needed and held off Chaz Davies to take a double win.

In the supersport race, Kyle Smith narrowly finished in third after a bit of last lap fairing bashing between the race winner Sofuoglu and Cluzel almost gifted him second spot.

A cracking race, with VR46 showing the young bucks how to do it. All at his ripe old age of 36! What passion and motivation he has got. Hope he gets another World Title this season. GOAT!!

lol, no response to that.

F1 really isn't motorsport. MotoGP is where it's at, and Rallying (more so pre WRC)! I just wish MotoGP was more accessible. Come on Sky or BBC, dump F1 and sort it out please!!

Where most motorsport goes wrong is that it forgets that truly great watching requires vehicles that can be balanced on and beyond the level of adhesion. I could accept the current woeful turbo engines if it looked as thought the cars were more powerful than the chassis could take. All the greatest drivers in history could be seen to do this; Jim Clark, Fangio, Senna, Rossi, Doohan, Vatanen, McRae etc. You watched them with your jaw dropped. How can someone go 20 mph faster through that corner and at that angle? Current drivers are just as capable of doing this as the older guys were but the current cars are designed to stick like glue then let go suddenly or not to slide at all. The manufacturers won't accept this. They want to chuck millions at corporate hospitality full of enthusiastic suppliers / customers and their bored partners with a visit from the driver (product) in their full corporate regalia. What they seemingly fail to understand is that, with the invention of Youtube (gawd bless them) the paying public need more excitement than the current formulae offer. Take pitstops for example. They used to be exciting because they added a little bit of extra excitement and unpredictability. Employing two dozen guys to change four wheels in two seconds is tedious and proves nothing. Allow two blokes and a couple of trolley jacks! Grand Prix are also far too long. The average punter has the attention span of a bluebottle. No-one wants to watch sixty laps of this unless they're a bl**dy statistician. Cut the races down to 30 laps tops and employ a bit of BTCC flair. If spectators understood that motorcycle racing is not populated with greasy bikers wielding axes and bike chains and went to a race, car racing would be finished...

I used to be a big F1 fan but now find it as boring as hell. Moto GP is where it's at.

Rossi winning again, fantastic result, as for F1 switched off last year as is now an endurance race, looking after tyres, engine, fuel, when a driver is told to take it easy on lap 3 this is not racing, split it into 2 x 30 lap races and get rid of pit stops and let the drivers race hard, 2nd race have a reverse starting line up but what do i know I will keep watching Moto GP and keep the sky scription money.

If more people are switching to Moto GP (and bike racing in general), I so wish the BBC et al, would at least have the decency to mention it during the sports news bulletins...

Agree with the news bulletins- however, fair play to Vassos on Chris Evans breakfast show this morning- he mentioned it!

BT Sport for live coverage, or ITV4 on Monday for the highlights (in the UK)

I wouldn't bother with the highlights on ITV 4, it's Moto GP, the highlights are generally the full race, certainly are this year, find a good site, download for 30 minutes max and put it on your plex and watch it on your big TV, you won't be disappointed.

I think its funny that racing series that used to be sprints to the finish (F1 and to some extent BTCC judging by some of the driver interviews from the weekend) are now tyre endurance races, whereas Endurance races (WEC etc) are now flat out 6 hour sprints!
