Spontaneous ebay purchases
Discussion
I bought a 1998 VFR800 off ebay this lunchtime. Found it, rang the dealer for a quick chat. Bid while having lunch with 5 secs remaining. Won it!
35k miles with valves done at 24k. Baglux tank cover and givi rack. 12 months MOT. £1410
So. What bikes have you bought spontaneously? Late night bidding with a few beers? Any regrets?

Is that R1Loon modelling them?My Ducati 1198. Had researched them a lot and decided that I couldn't justify one. Went to test ride a KTM Superduke R 1290 and didn't bother as I was really disappointed up close to it. Wandered over to the other side of the dealer and there was the exact spec and year 1198 I'd been sniffing at before I decided I didn't want one. Heart ruled head, deal was done and 1198 purchased.
I also have a habit of buying bikes I don't want or need if they are very cheap. As long as I make some money on them, I'm happy.

Bought a Thunderace after passing my test.
Should have researched them. This one drank oil and the exup valve was a mess of corrosion and the cables were rotted through. Thought it was a pussycat to ride, really docile and easy, my mates said "Get a 600!". Bleh. Pussies.
Problem came when I got near 9k rpm. Docile became ballistic in an instant when the gummed up exup valve was forced open, and crazy tank slappers down the road. Frightened the life out of me. Suddenly my mates sounded a bit more sensible.
Fixed everything, but had more respect for it after that. Bought a rebore kit (1040) to cure the oil thing. Didn't work. That and the exup free exhaust and rejet netted a whole 1hp over the previous dyno run pre mods. Not a great return for £1k cost of mods.

Not eBay, but my MV Agusta F3. Our house move/purchase fell through and work changed up a gear meaning less time to ride. I fancied the Daytona or a 848 EVO Corse to replace my ZX6-R. Test rode the 675 and was underwhelmed and not really that excited. I also have a habit of buying bikes I don't want or need if they are very cheap. As long as I make some money on them, I'm happy.
Tried to get a ride on an 848 but my local Ducati dealer declined to give me a test ride or take me seriously on the pre-registered EVO they had in.
I started ringing around the 3 MV Dealers in the country. 2 (now sacked) were rubbish, the other was in Silverstone. Was at a loose end with the OH one weekend and decided to drive up and have a quick look. Got there at 16:00 on a Saturday, got on the bike at 16:30. They kept the dealership open whilst I had a decent ride. Came back in, argued with myself about reliability, ease of servicing, cost, practicality, insurance and security. Head said go look at a Ducati or maybe a Fireblade. Heart won out and I put a deposit down.
Then I found out there was only 1 dealership left a few months later!
Now I run a small OC and have good links in to all the new dealerships. And an MV in the garage.
Bought a Scooter one week then 4 weeks later randomly bought a GSX600FP.
So now have 5 cars and 2 bikes.. worryingly I keep trawling Ebay looking at more bikes..
Today 2 helmets arrived :-) I now have 4 of those.
A little over 5 yrs ago I picked up a V12 Aston in much the same manner
Impulse shopping,, ya can't beat it!

drunken eBay/Amazon purchases
never been a bike but several things have turned up on Tuesdays and Wednesdays I don't remember ordering.
Amazon is the worst one - one click shopping should be banned whilst drunk, or at least should have a maths puzzle to solve.never been a bike but several things have turned up on Tuesdays and Wednesdays I don't remember ordering.
Ebay, not so bad. Purchased a Land Rover 300tdi once whilst drunk on a buy it now. Bid on a older zx6r track bike at a grand total of £800, and was winning, but the seller cancelled my bid and then cancelled the auction.
In the last few days i have been feeling that i need a Repsol CBR in my life currently... Will be deleting ebay off my phone at lunch.

Doug Stanhope has got a good bit in his Beer Hall Putch routine about drunk ebaying. Not remembering what you ordered for 5-7 business days, and random stuff turning up that revealed the anxieties he apparently has when drunk. Quite good stuff.
Well, the VFR continues to impress. It rides so well for a 17 yr old bike. Clutch slips a little when cold and under hard throttle/high revs, settles down a bit when warm. Other than that, the suspension is obviously a little wobbly, but perfectly ok for 8/10ths road riding.
I got a high-level can off ebay for less than £100, which makes it sound properly nice and look better than standard by revealing that lovely single-sided swingarm.
Got a replacement standard shaped clear screen on back-order. I hate the black double-bubble thing.
Tank range is good. It goes to reserve at 170-190 miles, even with some thrashing. Mostly down to 22 litre tank as actual MPG isn't wonderful at around 42-44 mpg so far.
One of the best bikes i've bought. If i'd spent a grand more on purchasing it i don't think i'd feel ripped off. Well pleased.
In fact, i'm enjoying it so much i haven't used my blade for a while. In fact it makes the blade look rather silly - too small, too fast, not as nice sounding, expensive, relatively fragile and requiring intimate cleaning after each ride because it's so new and i want to keep it that way, whereas the VFR i'm happy to give a quick going over once a week or so.
