10 yrs ago my girlfriend bought me a voucher for a week of bike training and my CBT. I was busy at work, left it in a drawer and when I finally called to book it the voucher had expired. The bds wouldn't honour an out of date voucher. So I never sat my CBT or rode a bike on the open road but I'm feeling inspired to finally get it done. Good Work OP keep us posted

I'm a late starter, I've been riding 125s since 2009 decided to take my test last year and passed at the age of 45.

Last week I bought myself a 1340evo harley which is great for riding around at sensible speeds.

Not into the village people look just love the sound and look of the bike. ( ok I may grow a moustache and get a pair of arseless leather chaps for those hot sunny days cruising the seafront)

Some inspiration for some of you "late" starters..

My Dad decided to do his CBT 18 months ago aged 70, he suffers from ill health at times which has put him back but he passed his theory test last month, which I feared he would find the hardest to do, seeing as he has never sat in front of a computer and clicked a mouse until February of this year.

Anyway, here he is with me last week, getting some miles in on his YBR , before his Mod 1 end of this month, some of his fellow trainees at his riding school are in there 60's...When i started riding in the 80s, anyone with a bike over the age of 30 was considered an older rider!

thumbup Awesome. My dad is over 70 and still enjoys rideouts on his SV650, and has ridden up to the IOM for the TT twice with me and my brother. Actually taking the bike test at 70 when an awful lot of people are barely capable of driving a car safely is great smile

Well its test day.

Got my theory booked in for 6.45pm this evening. Gives me chance to do a few practice questions after work.

Wish me luck.

Good luck. It actually is not that hard - just logical thinking.

Taking it this evening.

My browser was accidentally set to American English and so any spelling and typing mistakes through my heavy handed typing were corrected that way. Really though, I'm not overly bothered.

Well I failed. Which I'm very annoyed about because I'll have to pay to sit another test, and it will delay me getting the rest of my license done.

I got 48/50 for the questions, and the hazard perception is what I failed on because of the test scoring system.

After watching the 'practice video' it said make sure you click for this and that etc, some will develop into a hazard and some an additional hazard.

So first clip, I clicked about 8 times for the hazards. In the practice video it showed far more clicks for some clips than that so I thought I was ok. Then a message pops up saying 'you clicked in an unacceptable manner you will score 0 for this clip'

Immediately I think fk now I've failed for certain, which set me up to fail for the remaining clips as I was then overly cautious about my number of clicks. Because of this on what I imagine were the clips immediately after this on 2 clips I scored 0 and another 2 I only got 1.

Had I not been given 0 for that first clip, I would have passed as I was 1 point off the mark required to pass.

grrrrr

I failed the hazard perception, is such an odd system that I ended up just clicking consistently around where I thought it wanted me to rather than just when I saw the hazard - the points scoring window seemed very small.

Onwards and upwards!

Any tips to share for the hazard perception? I'm booked for a week on Friday and it's the bit I'm worried about. I don't fully understand the scoring system which is my biggest hang up!

(P.S. go do your CBT anyway, it's awesome, fantastic value for money too and I learned tons last Thursday)

I lifted this from that suggested thread as its spot on really. Basically Its more about learning when the scoring system will let you get points and clicking at the right time than actually spotting the hazards.

'Basically you click when you spot a hazard developing, and click more if it continues to develop. There is an obvious hazard in each clip, something like a cyclist doing an emergency stop, a car pulling out of a junction into your path etc. Click when you spot the hazard, click as it develops, and look out for additional hazards as some clips have more than one. If you sit clicking at everything you see you fail the clip.

Each clip is given a score based on how quickly you spot the developing hazard and respond to it with a click. If you don't click quick enough you get no points, if you spam the clicks to try and cover everything, again you get no points.'

The hazard test is flipping stupid. I don't think anyone understands how it works or what they class as a hazard or turn into one.

I got told when you see something click 3 times as if you were counting a second ie click and click and click. If you are a experienced road user you might spot something to early so clicking like that covers you.

The key thing is to google it and practice like mad on those sites, you will learn what to expect ish. Some of the clips might even be used on your test so its worth it, they did on mine.

I bought a practice cd-rom called 'The complete motorcycle theory and hazard perception' made by focus multimedia. It's really good and has tonnes of practice tests and different ways to practice. It also tracks your progress so you can see improvement. It is particularly good for the hazard perception which is something that you need to learn how it works ideally before doing the test, as posters above have explained. I failed the driving one first time around as I clicked too many times. The main thing for me is to look for the 'developing hazard' they are usually pretty obvious and I think two of the clips have two hazards not just one.

Passed my Mod 1 today, in the rain, howling wind, I got quite worried about the emergency stop but it was OK.
