99's fetch nowhere near as much. Its all about the 98 bike with the white or red YZF down the side.

It was pretty special when it was introduced. Bikes with reasonable mileage that haven't been spangly pro bolted out with sliced up undertrays and 1 inch exhausts are now hard to come across.

There are many things that make it sought after now but mainly It was a benchmark bike, a game changer and moved things on in terms of performance and certainly styling over the competition at the time.

People usually want the first or last of the line and these generally command the higher prices, sharp idea would be to buy things like stock under trays/pipes for all those restoration projects for these bikes start in another few years and these stock parts are NLA...

What's so special about the first R1? silly question really. First Fireblade? First liquid cooled 2-stroke? these were being tipped as future collectables at least 5 years ago when the RC30 and OWO1 prices went mental.
The Brits are the worst for Nostalgia and pay a premium for it. It's known as the 30 year cycle. 30 years after the first R1, former owners will absolutely crave one again, if only just to look at in some cases.
I never thought LC 350s would go over 2.5k or the 500 LC over 3.5 k, or no way the RG 500 would go over 5.k. It all got very silly and now people want the first R1s.
