I've just been checking my bike over before heading off to the TT on Friday, and while cleaning and luring the chain I've noticed that there is a few mill of side to side movement on the chain as it runs over the rear sprocket.

So, if I am stood behind the bike, I can move the chain noticeably from left to right by a few MM as it is on the rear sprocket.

I suspect this is fine, but I've never noticed it before on any of my bikes.

Chain is a DID X ring, Sprocket is a Renthal, all standard size and pitch.

Sound normal?

I've noticed this a few times on a few of my bikes.

Never checked with a fresh C+S set mind.

I've ridden pretty quickly with it as above for 1000's of miles. Ignorance is bliss.

Normal, you don't want your chain being tight over the sprockets.

I believe its fine, last month I got a new standard set of chain and sprockets for mine and it does move a fair bit! Never remember it being this much but so far so good.

Is it aligned?

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding.

You should definitely have a small amount of movement, but a few mm sounds excessive. I just checked my fireblade which has a fairly new set of chain and sprockets and I get about 0.8mm of sideways free play.

It's possible someone has fitted the wrong width chain for the sprockets e.g. a 530 chain on 520 sprockets.

Hi everyone.

I'm sure it's fine, just one of those things that the more I looked at, the more I started to question.

it's all stars and size and pitch, so 530, and the rear sprocket is marked 530, it's all aligned and tensioned correctly.

The chain moves on the sprocket from side to side when looking from the rear of the bike maybe 1.5-20mm, as I say I'm happy that this is correct.

All the correct parts fitted properly = don't worry about it.

What if all the correct parts are fitted properly?
