In 2011 I bought my 2008 08 plate HP2 Sport ABS with 445 miles on it from a dealer for £9250. Had it 4 months and got made redundant. So I panicked and sold it to a German dealer for £9500.

I was at the same dealers where I bought mine earlier today they have a 2010 10 plate with 975 miles on it up at £16,495.

That's £7k over what I paid 4 years ago for one that was in essence newer at the time.

They are a great bike and less than 50 came to the UK but £16k + I don't think so.

Tell me about it frown

Was waiting until they dropped to £7k before I pounced.

They never reached it... Another bike I'll never bother buying now as its slipped outside my 'value for money' bracket.

They are beautiful though.

Why is it mad?

If demand outstrips supply in any product, then prices rise. one of the Porsche GT3 (I think) has risen massively over original list price. My first house cost me 10x what someone paid 20 years earlier, 20 years on and it's worth 4x as much again. Some stuff goes up, some down.

Because a lot of s who have absolutely no interest in cars or motorcycles are manipulating the fking market.

Since the fking recession people are being advised to invest and diversifty into 'alternative investments'.

Opportunistic finger in the fking air pricing

Are you serious? People have bought all sorts of stuff for decades. Art, wine, property, gold, diamonds, woodland pork bellies etc. Why the outrage?

So few came into the country.
Were any actually ridden properly or are they all garage queens?

Sounds reasonable imho. No less special than a new Panigale or R1mmer, arguably more so in fact, if not quite the homolgation status of things like the Pani R. So 24 feels about right imho. They're not making any more of them...

They're being ridden for sure, just saw one getting new tyres today at FWR as it was being used as a track toy. The ones up for sale recently have all had 10k+ miles

I've seen photos of plenty of them on track. Also, Scunnylad has one, and he doesn't hang about, I'm sure it gets used appropriately.

Has he got an HP2 Sport or an HP2. I think there's a difference, but stand to be corrected on both counts.

As far as I know, the was sporty bike was the HP2 Sport, they also made an enduro adventure thing called the HP2 Enduro, but you don't hear those talked about much, but I'm no expert.

I had an hp2 enduro well back in the day. Just a proper oddball thing, awesome but awful in use in equal measure.

Made a few quid when I sold it, would have made more if I'd kept it!

Doesn't one of the scheduled services include new pistons and cams?

Not sure about pistons etc tho they may do at some point

IIRC BMW recommend a top end engine strip and inspection at 30,000 miles

Thought i'd bump this one in case anyone on here has an HP2 at the moment and can help share their experience. I had one from new back in 2009 and recently started thinking about getting back on one. Loved it at the time, plenty of short road trips and a trackday at Silverstone.

Prices seem very high at the moment but i haven't been keeping an eye out to see if they're holding value, or just not selling at all... anyone lend any insight?

Also need to consider the service and running costs for such a bike, but can't think they're that much worse than any other boxer engine, and it's only the prospect of bodywork damage that i should be mindful of the potential bills?

The looks still work for me!!

Old post but it has been resurrected and not by me biggrin . So from 2011 through 2015 this bike nearly doubled in value. Because I'm bored I had a quick look on eBay and it would seem you need 18k to buy one.

I no 2 strokes and some old classic 4 strokes have become ridiculously expensive to buy now but has anything in the bike world increased at this percentage in such a short time ?

The car world classifieds are enough to make you feel sick if you believe the bullst value of some cars that couldn't be given away at the time. This is my old 993 c2s wide body that I struggled to sell for 28k back in 2004 , I was informed by a friend( tosser) the car would fetch 90k plus today frown Lets hope bikes don't go the same way .

And while I am at it where has old loon r1 ( gavia) disappeared to confused

He mentioned himself on a posting some months ago that he had to be on better behaviour.

Yep, most asking prices seem to be 18k upwards but these are from a bike shop so should have the guarantee that provides.
I haven’t seen a private sale for a while, but would expect that to be less (with similar miles).
There are a few rumours of a water cooled version, in which case the original can only go up in price.
I think it’s fair to say that they aren’t used for the daily commute so miles are kept low.
The 30k check was to check con rods I thought. So if they aren’t tracked or raced then that may not be necessary.
I dare say it’s nothing special in comparison with some of the Ducati etc. but it’s a sweet ride and handles lovely. Light and responsive with great looks it’s a keeper to be enjoyed in the garage and on the road.

The problem for me with stuff like this, is that it would stop me enjoying riding it.

I really like these, and although £18,000 is a lot of money to me, that isn't what would stop me buying bikes like it, the problem for me is that with an appreciating value vehicle, every time I took it out I'd be like "oh god I must sort that stone chip" or "I must get home an detail it immediately", or "how much would it cost me in depreciation if I took it into mainland Europe?".

It's not just the potential loss of thousands for simply using the damned thing, I'd be hyper aware all the time that I had something special that must be looked after. It fuels a neuroses that I see in a lot of owners of "special" vehicles. I understand why, but it seems to mean they spend so more time polishing and reading than anything else. Personally I just can't enjoy that ownership proposition, to me things are made to be used.

That to me is the biggest tragedy when prices go up like this, it's that loss of the bike from usable circulation. Because I suspect many are like me and, beyond money, would feel a sense of obligation to wrap it up in cotton wool. Which isn't the point of a motorcycle in my opinion, which I appreciate no-one asked for. biglaugh
