I was 40 recently and have been struggling to decide on a present - either another shotgun, another watch or another bike. In the end a classic bike won out. Not quite birth year, but a freshly restored (200 miles since ground up resto) 1979 Suzuki SP370. She rides and looks like a brand new bike. Just the exhaust to source as they are like rocking horse st. Down pipe and mid 'soup can' section are original, but the end can was chopped as beyond repair to give the option of welding on an original end can later as a cheaper option.

These were a bit 'old hat' when they came out in 1978, so lived in the shadow of the XT500 and XL500, but they are significantly lighter than both (like 35kg) and are basically an early to mid-70s design that came out too late.

Looking good. Wasn't aware of the middle aged requirement to buy something around your birth year. As I passed 40 a long time ago I think I'd be looking at Dodge Chargers or a Beretta or something - were there actually any funky bikes in the late 60's / early 70's? confused
It's more a watch thing, although tracking down a specific year gun or watch tends to be an exercise in buying what's available rather than what you really want!

My bike knowledge pretty much stops before 1984 so I can't help with older stuff. I basically just spot something pretty and research it. You aren't buying these for their performance, so as long as you like it and they were not a nightmare bike in their day, that's all that matters ! If it goes up in value, that's a bonus.

Thats lovely Pete, looks a minter, you finding it a nice change thumping around on that from the sportsbikes?
It's more C90 than sports bike. Super comfy though - no narrow seat like later dual sports. Just need to dig out 'on any Sunday' again and watch it a couple of times. Then buy a metal flake open face helmet biglaugh

Getting ready for a wee ride out today. Not ridden this one since October last year so it should be fun remembering about the reverse shift.

Enjoy! Monza's one of my favourite tracks - utter mental speed everywhere. Curve Grande (first big right after first chicane) is top end of 5th gear even on standard road (i.e. very long) gearing.

Nightlife is not as good compared to Spanish ones, partly because everyone's sat there with 1000 yard stares and overheated brains from the day.

P.S. It's proper hard on brakes - make sure you've got enough pads.

Nice bike thumbup

I've been using reverse shift for years so have to adapt if riding someone else's bike, but to keep it simple I have reverse shift on all my bikes.

New bike alert! Bought my third ever bike yesterday after 4.5 years with the street triple. I bought an S1000R.

I got a bit lost on the 4+ hour ride home and found an aircraft museum I'd never heard of. Was a great day!
