So a mate's just bought a 2005 R1 track bike and just starting to pull it apart and found a pair (new) knee sliders Gaffa taped to the subframe to support the seat unit which made me giggle a bit and fear for what else I'll find.

He got it cheap because it rattles a bit. Previous owner took a little video of it rattling away:

Any bets on what we'll find?

It becomes intermittent until it disappears as the revs climb. I'm inclined to agree with the comment on the video, cam chain tensioner.

Could be worse, This evening I noticed a missing engine mounting bolt with part of it still stuck in the engine block. fk knows how I'm going to get that out.

Jesus, good luck with that, I spent an hour trying to get a fairing bolt off the fireblade at the weekend. I suspect a fk off extractor, drill in, turn it with the reversed thread and hope for the best.

Just don't buy cheap ones, I stripped two of these on a fairing bolt.

Personally, id pay someone to do that, I utterly hate stuck stuff.

Drill a hole, tap it with a reverse thread, insert reverse threaded bolt with some metal bonding stuff on it, undo it?

Luckily it's open at the back, there is also some thread showing so I will try a shorter bolt, if not I can drill it out and use a longer nut and bolt. Pain, as the project was going swimmingly!

You might get lucky, as you drill it, it may unscrew and pop out the back. I've just 'invested' in a Snap-on extractor set - left hand drills!!! Used twice so far, both times just the drilling has brought out the broken stud

Good luck

IIRC, Imatra was where Sheene and some accomplices torched the toilet block because it was so, er, crap, and the Finns wouldn't build a new one.

I think you might be right.

Just pulled it apart and checked the valve clearances (nothing too tight), pulled the alternator out and the magnets haven't started falling off and the little bearing it spins (another problem other people have had) in seems good.

Cam lobes seem quite blued but it allegedly has Kent cams so I'm guessing they might be hardened differently - will check with mechanic type mate.

New tensioner maybe and put it back together (errr) and get it started up.

Judging by the track , they did well not to have to dig the crapper themselves !! smile
