We had heard about Zappa and them lot a couple of years before we met. They hung around westgate road on a Saturday doing wheelies and burnouts ( think Mad Max) and did their stuff around the Durham/hartside are, they were all also from Newcastle area so seemed well dodgy to us lot.
The first clash on the road came May 1st 1994 (the day Senna died) we had been to the lakes and stopped at Hartside. When we came out there they all were, fkn GSX-R's of all colours and shapes, paddock jackets over leathers, straight through pipes etc etc, while us lot looked like we'd just stepped off a 500gp grid.
I was on a demonstrater from Ian Bells After sticking my exup head on into a car a month before Aky was on his Fireblade, rest of the lads had fireblades, 600 honda's and what not.
I set off at the front and stopped there until not far off Hexham when Aky came past me sideways on the brakes and hit a telegraph pole. Snapped thigh, punchered lung and a mangled hand that is still fked today.
That was our introduction to them lot.
What amazes me is how so many survived the era - it was mad and the roads really were race tracks. The first clash on the road came May 1st 1994 (the day Senna died) we had been to the lakes and stopped at Hartside. In comparison, the odd jaunt to DB and Hartside seems rather tame now (with the odd bit of 'going for it' in fits and farts).
Saturdays on the Hill is where they got the idea for the film
Isn't Simmi the lad doing the exhausts and stuff up in Consett?

Cool story (really). Love the time sheet The first clash on the road came May 1st 1994 (the day Senna died) we had been to the lakes and stopped at Hartside.
