Hey liam if you are looking for a supermoto then here is a list off the top off my head that don't need to be restricted.

yamaha xt660
mz baghira(same engine as above)
ccm r30 644
ccm r35 (uses drz400)
honda fmx 650
also if you want a sporty single look at the yamaha szr660.

SV650 - I did look at these before, and I do really like them.. from what I have seen of them the riding position would be half way between a sports bike and an upright and I have no problems with either so it is a really worthwhile suggestion. That, and after what Hooli said, I had to have a little look on Youtube.. and if I can get one to sound like this, I am sold!

400's - Good arguements for and against getting one, but there is something about them that I can't help but love and I have had a VERY little go on a ZXR before and it was comfortable when I was bigger so will probably be more comfortable now I've gone from near enough 16 stone, to 12 stone and I am not worried about maintenance as I have a reliable car now so won't need to rely on the bike, and I am in no way scared of getting stuck in with fixing it or anything.

Versys/ER6 - Not in budget yet, and they seem more like commuter bikes to me, which is not what I want.. I have a boring diesel for that

Hornets/Bandits - Would love one as they can look really smart if modified nicely, but am wary of all the comments on here calling them boring, and I don't want a bike to be boring once I've got used to it..

Supermoto's - All good suggestions on this front, and I do really like the look of CCM's but as was mentioned, I would like to go a bit further a field than London to meet people from here etc. as not many people I know are going on to big bikes, so will sort of rely on myself dragging myself around the country to get to rideouts/trackdays with you lot! Which is another reason I sort of want a more sporty bike, I can already tell I am going to be addicted to trackdays and a supermoto can do them, but I want to be able to get to places comfortably without neck muscles the size of small boulders!

From your list and my experience of owning them

Fazer 600, a great do everything bike, not boring

Hornet 600, as above but a flat midrange then flies along at the top end, not boring

Bandit 600, Boring, dull as ditchwater with no redeeming features whatsoever.

FZR600, cheap and nasty, peaky and harsh suspension.

CBR600, great, in all guises.

Not ridden or owned any of the 400's are they were all in a ropey condition 10 years ago, never mind now.

XJ600's are crap and you'll hate it, they are ok for a commuter but that's it.

Just check what the A2 licence allows. I know it's an utter pain now they've changed the rules and you can't buy an R6 and restrict it for example (mate was planning to do just that).

I may well be wrong,but I was under the impression that you couldn't exceed 600cc regardless of the output. For bikes of 600cc and below the could only be restricted from double or less than double the restricted output. e.g it can't have more than 94hp before being restricted.
There's also something about power to weight ratios to look out for...

Is 94hp at the rear wheel pre-restriction? If so I'm looking to offload my Thundercat as soon as I can be arsed to advertise it & you could have it for a good chunk less than your budget.

Needs a bit of tidying, & I'm not sure how it would feel post-restriction, but I expect it'd do the job nicely for a young man such as yourself.

I wanted to like the Fazer when we looked at one for the Mrs, but we both found the silly tank shape on the early models dig in to our legs and was pretty uncomfortable, might be ok if you're a short arse but while I agree they're a great bike, if you're thinking about one make sure you gegt a decent test ride to check if it's comfortable for you.

Ended up getting her an XJ600, which is actually a great bike, reliable, comfortable, easy to ride...but never going to do a lot for the pulse rate. It's kind of the biking equivalent of her Honda Jazz really

i went from a ninja to a fazer and it was boring as st. i wouldn't suggest one of them unless its free! the er6 which you dismissed i had as a courtesy bike for a few months and was much better (than the fazer)

but its strokes and folks innit. everyone on here has different opinions best to narrow it down to what you like the look of and go from there pal

Scorpion exhaust, rear hugger, small 'plate, small indicators, laser cut rad grille, Renthal wide bars and a grin from ear to ear! Loved that bike, absolutely stonking.



Yes, I know the exhaust is a bit of a colour clash but when you're 19 and you're offered one from the Hornet forum for £70 you don't say no!!

In the past week or so, I have viewed a ZXR 400, an FZR600, a CBR600F and a CBR400 that my mate has, and I still haven't come to a decision!

Have my theory test booked for a few days time too, then I'll be doing a two day course for the licence and I can't wait any longer

Would you be able to get an R6 and have it restricted? I thought the new laws changed all that but I may be wrong.

Don't know much about them but just started doing some research on the Honda nc30. They look good to me and as your not commuting I imagine they'd be a lot of fun. I'm tempted to get a commuter bike and one of them but can't really justify it.

Would you be able to legally ride one of them with the restrictions?

I commuted on my nc30 no problems. Rode Chester to Cadwell, did a trackday, then back again, no aches or anything. The nc29 is probably too small for most men. Zxr one of the taller 400s and many say the best. The fun in them is the rev range, ride on track at 11k+ and they're happily screaming along. Just because some people haven't seen good examples of old 400s doesn't mean they don't exist. Some will have been cherished, because of their character and now rarity value. Cheap road tax, cheap insurance too.
