I currently drive an M135i as my daily driver which I absolutely love but I have recently become eligible for the BMW dealer staff leasing scheme through a relative.

Based on the recent offers in the scheme my sensible head would say go for something like a 435d M Sport which is still very fast and reasonably frugal (but it's a diesel!)

The other option is to say "what the hell" and go for an M5, it's only for 18 months, then get back into something a little more sensible. I've owned several M3's in the past but never an M5 and am very tempted to scratch that itch.

I do about 13k miles a year in my daily driver and average 31 MPG in the M135i so I was wondering what real-world MPG people see in their M5s ? It will obviously be worse than the M135i but not sure by how much.

I'd also be interested to know what service intervals people have seen as I wouldn't have the service pack in the deal and it would be good if I could squeeze the 18 month lease into just the 1200 mile oil change and not pay for the next service before I hand it back.

Any other advice people have to help with my decision would be appreciated.

Averaged 22mpg over 8000 miles when I had one I did drive it quite sensibly.

I've had mine from new and can report as follows:

I drive mine without worrying about fuel/right foot and return 18mpg which I'm happy with.

New rear tyres every 8000 or so and new fronts after every 15000 or so, obviously some will get more, some less.

No oil usage, no major niggles albeit the rear lights on the boot have cracked 5 times and been replaced under warranty without quibble. It's a st design and a pain having to go to the dealer more than anything. First running in service was FOC, next service at 16000 miles was £320 from memory.

I have 20's and rear sun protection otherwise standard and it comes pretty well equipped. I would have spec'd rear camera and folding seats as well, in fact I tried to add after I placed my order but was too late in the build process.

I have Silverstone II with Sakhir and it's a great combo. many people comment on the fact it shouldn't work but it does yes

Gearbox is great, super fast shifts and when it's going, feck me is it going yikes It picks up speed like nothing else however you do get used to it and take 560bhp for granted sometimes.

I suspect my disks and pads will be next and I'm budgeting £1200 to cover that based on a recent quote from Munich Legends.

It's fast as feck, sticks to the road like glue, makes me smile every time I get in it, looks the dogs and after 18 months I still LOVE IT biggrin

I have no idea what I'm going to get next, but I suspect it will have a BMW M 4.4 V8 TT under the bonnet.

Do it, you won't regret it albeit go in with your eyes open, it's a supercar and whilst servicing etc. isn't costly there are consumable costs associated with such a machine yes

Drove mine with sensible in mind with booting, out of town driving 25MPG over 12K miles.
M6 GC CP is slightly better @ 26MPG.

37k miles over 2.5 years and averaged 23mpg without paying too much attention. A lot of those mile are cruising on the motorway though. BMW should have put the crack pipe down before they came up with 28mpg combined for this car. Hard to believe that's possible. Just get one. You won't regret it for one second.

What can you expect to get if you were on a proper eco run?

I've seen 28mpg in my e39 driving from Dundee to Edinburgh taking it easy (60 mph) so I'd assume these could be quite good if you were trying.

I've seen 29-30mpg a number of times on gentle motorway cruises (steady ~70mph and no messing around with the throttle).

Warning though - hit an A road hard for a few miles after your exit junction and you'll be back down at 22-23mpg in no time. The best full journeys I've had over approx 100 miles mixed A road and motorway have been 26-27mpg

I find it pretty good on fuel to be honest.

I've always found a decent difference between cruising at 60 and 70 so that's hard to argue with given the huge performance available if you want.

I'd hate to bimble along at 60 mph on the motorway, if you want economy get a 318d.

Hardly. What's wrong with wanting half decent fuel economy on a boring motorway jaunt? I don't tend to do it that often but the difference in time between sitting at 60 and 70-80 is negligible given typical traffic conditions, unless over a fair distance.

I'll save properly caning it for roads that can actually be enjoyed.

Nope, doesn't do it for me..........you can have fun on a motorway and it cruises very nicely at 90mph yes

Each to their own. I generally cruise fast but on some occasions I've sat at 60-70 if I've been in no rush whatsoever or if I've been low on fuel and am holding out for a particular petrol station. I think its handy that the car can do 30mpg if you really want to and the extended range can be useful. If you bought an M5 only to drive it like that all the time, then I agree that would be rather pointless. I don't particularly care about fuel consumption but if the car were averaging <15mpg I probably wouldn't use it as an every day machine.

Suit yourself but fun on a motorway? Not unless you want to risk your licence and even then, not sure it quantifies as fun really.

Indeed it's a bizarre mindset, then again the OP is wringing his hands about a service....

These cars eat tyres and fuel and if that and the thought of having to service one is an issue then I'd say get something else that you can enjoy to the full, no point getting a 560hp car and eeking out the miles.

been borrowing my dads for 2 weeks. it's a really cool car. bigger than i'd like but it suits him brilliantly. i've got 23mpg out of it and costs about £85 to fill up. not bad considering the performance.

The noise is impressive. i drive it in Sport throttle, comfort steering, comfort suspension, and in the mid gearbox setting. Find this is the perfect balance for snappy acceleration and gear changes + comfort and not too jerky from the get-go.

If the throttle response is in efficient and the gearbox setting is on its lowest then it can be a pain around town traffic. it regularly leaves you in 2nd gear and you feel like you get nothing from the pedal and then all of a sudden is jumps into life and you look like a tt who's just passed his driving test if people are looking.

The traction control light flickers a bit more often than i'm comfortable with but he's got a full set of winter wheels and tyres which go on Dec - Apr

Thanks guys for all your feedback, it's been very informative and definitely food for thought.

I understand why some of you are wondering why I am considering such a car when I am concerned about the running costs. I already have a not cheap to run car, an Aston Martin Vantage S Roadster, but with the current opportunity to get an M5 at a very "reasonable" cost, the temptation is hard to resist but I need to go into this with my eyes open.

Nothing that has been said has scared me off but the challenge I have is to actually test drive one. I've phoned four local dealerships and not one has a demo or even a used one I can try.

I'll update this thread once I've made my decision. Thanks again......
