I have in ear earphones on, to remove my lid hurts like fk so I only do when I can avoid it.

But I regularly walk around Asda or Tesco picking up a few things with my lid on, not because I want to look like Robocop but because I only have two hands, one for the basket and the other to pick things up and put it in the basket. I don't want to be carrying my £300 lid about and drop it because I never really had my hands free.

If I was asked to remove it in store I would, if I was present with the above situation id personally write to the head office.

I've went into banks, supermarkets, newsagents and even most petrol stations without an issue whatsoever.

We need a huge PH bike meet at that Morrisons. All go in with helmets on and buy a small single item.

I'd be tempted to go back in wearing a Benny hat, fake full-face David Bellamy beard and dark glasses then see what they do.
I did disturb some scrote in a Benny peering in our lounge window some years ago; when I opened the front door he jumped the garden wall and legged it.
Two days later I spotted him coming out of a house round the corner, in the act of putting on his Benny. He was bright ginger, no wonder he wore the hat biggrin
One might say that a bike helmet would do a similar job of hiding an obvious hair-do...

Win.

Sounds like a jobsworth to me, needed something to liven up his boring job.

Maybe, and this is just a big maybe, whilst the staff can see your face in a flip up lid, the ever present " Eye in the sky" CCTV cameras can't, being mounted high up towards the ceiling??
So if something were to occur, identification would be difficult??
But then that comes back to the (overly worn) counter argument about other head gear ... say, a nice floppy summer hat with pretty flowers on.

not disagreeing at all but I get it comes down to staffs perceptions and sensitivities. Maybe if you stood at the tills with a baseball cap and hoodie then see what they do wink

I expect one of the bosses was in and they were trying to point score. It has happened to me very rarely at garages and I shrug, pay and never go back.

I know some else mentioned and it is very much the same. But talk it through step by step.
Undo velcro cuffs on my jacket.
Undo velcro gloves.
Remove gloves.
Have to hold gloves.
Under helmet.
Remove helmet.
Ear plugs usually come loose as helmet catches my ears as is tight.
Hold helmet.
Get wallet out whilst juggling helmet, glove, and sometimes ear plugs if they fall out, and my shopping.

Once you've gone through all of that, you then have to put your helmet plug to put the ear plugs back in which means having to put it somewhere which I hate as all it takes is wind, some idiot, or many other external factors and thats £500 down the drain having to get a new helmet.

Hope that justifies it a bit.

Strangely enough, once I exited the store, one of the above vested men decided to tell me has a bike too and "it's the law mate. I have a bike and take mine off at garages".

I like the mental image of someone called Evil Len wearing a nice floppy summer hat with pretty flowers on. Gold teeth, brutal tattoos and a chopper would go well with that. If you have actual pictures please post them.

I have the same issue with specs and full face helmet plus silky balaclava thing to prevent hair pulling. It's a hassle, but I'd feel very conspicuous and a bit of a nutter if I went into a regular shop wearing it. Like someone in a Zovirax advert. I'm sure I felt the same when I had a flip up lid too. Kind of expected trouble so took it off.

Sums it up tbh, right pain in the arse, plus as someone else said, you then walk round the shop, lid in one hand, basket in the other and no hands free to put the items in. If you're only buying a couple of items you can use your lid as a mini basket, but then you spend more time taking all the stuff of than you do in the shop. Add to all this the fact the OP's face was totally visible and he was stood waiting to pay, I dont think there was any real need for the removal of the lid.

+1

Look at it from a retail point of view. They are told to have a level and equally applied rule. This stops any ambiguity or 'well last week you allowed the [insert any feature here] to walk around unchallenged.

Plus the sides of the helmet can obscure identification from already difficult cctv anglea/courage.. In a line up could you identify a caucasian male from just squashed up nose and eyes? Would you be able to say conclusively who it was? Not forgetting a male dressed in protective gear and helmet CAN look intimidating to some customers.

Honest question, how long does it take to unclip your helmet? Bed hair? laugh
Read the fking full thread, it was a flip front helmet with the front flipped up, his face was totally exposed.
What bit of this are you struggling with.

All of it, it seems!

Op you did nowt wrong. I never take my helmet off when going to petrol stations either.

Why the non bikers say....

1) It is faff, it slows me down to have to remove it and then put it back on. If I wanted to go slow I would user my car
2) Where do you put it? SO you end up carrying it around with more chance of it getting banged
3) I am ugly as fk, I am doing everyone a favour keeping it on

Jobsworth.

Those saying take the lid off, surely that negates the point of a flip front?
