I'd like to bring to the table 94mph in a punto.

That may not sound very impressive but the book speed stated a top speed on 93 mph.

Why did he need three football pitches for stopping? Wouldn't he be better using his brakes?

That isn't good math. I used to regularly get up to speeds around that mark(*) when I was into sports bikes and liked to see how quickly I could stop (they tell you that emergency braking is an essential skill when driving so I tried to bring stuff like that across to riding) and no way was it anything over the length of a pitch.

Cars and bikes these days stop a hell of a lot quicker than the highway code, which was written generations ago, suggests.

(*) on a private test track, your honour.

Vectra sounded like a jet engine? Sounds more like the Police are exaggerating s.

To an extent, but a lot of crap gets talked about braking. A single stop is down to tyres and mass far more than brakes, and most decent cars have pretty similar stopping distances. They have gone down, but not as much as people tend to assume, at least not in recent years.

I once got my mums 1.2 8v Corsa with 44bhp up to 110mph once on our local private track. A tremendous achievement!

Every car show that I've seen in recent years has shown that stopping distances have come down by a LARGE margin over that in the highway code.

Can't be bothered smile

Look up the Autocar test results for braking performance. I kept an eye on them over a few months and was surprised how similar they were (admittedly, braking from 60 or 70, I think).

Mines was an official record as adjudicated by the police. Not looking going on the speedo. I seem to remember the police being that impressed with it they awarded me some points and everything

I'm on my phone 90 percent of the time. If you got that in a text you wouldn't give it a second glance.

Surely a beast such as a 1.2 Corsa has an accurate speedo that can cope with all sorts of crazy speeds? smile

Yup.

I'm told they'll make the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs as well.
