IIRC Chipchap is one of the monumental envelope pushers, so if an inexperienced baby such as myself can have the Tiger's pegs scraping on a test ride without trying to work it hard, then I doubt it would be at all suitable for a riding God.

Other than that, I thought the Tiger was a lovely, comfortable bike and good value in XRT guise.
Now there is a fair chance that you have me mixed up with someone else or there is an equal chance that you are just taking the pi$$. On the other hand you may be being provocative ?

Which is it as I am a tad thick ?

A
Most definitely not provocative, maybe deliberately mixing you up with someone else that you ride with though, so not sure what that's classed as. Gentle leg pulling perhaps?

I still have my MV F4 for sports bike stuff but the 2nd bike will have 2 uses. 1st for 2 up with the GF and she wont get on anything that does not have a long seat to peg reach, comfy seat and top box or sissy bar with back pad. Then I want it to be fun when I am on it solo.

So for me the Multistrada 1200S or the BMW S1000XR can fulfil that role as they have 17" wheels front and rear, 150+ bhp and the ones that I have been out with look easy to ride fairly quickly.

So I don't want a Triumph Trophy or a K1600 BMW as it would just sit in the garage most of its life only coming out for 5 or 6 days out and maybe a week away.

In that case I'd only look at the new generation of sport touring adventure bikes - Multistrada, 1190 adventure and S1000XR. Something with around 150bhp, extremely good handling but can also waft down to the south of France 2-up with full luggage in complete comfort. The 1990 has a 19" front wheel but plenty of electorics and 150bhp. It's a shame there's not more choice out there, would it be that hard for Suzuki to take the 1000cc 145bhp engine from the new GSX-S1000 and put it in the new v-strom 1000 frame? Instant 145bhp super adventure that would be a good few grand cheaper than the competition.

Non of the above.

Yamaha Tracer. Brand new.

If your fussy / dead keen to spend the additional £6k you can buy it Ohlins, Akrapovic, gel seats, luggage, women, drugs, blah, blah, blah.
Nice enough bike, but make sure the ergonomics work for you.

I had a go and really, really wanted to like it, but there was no leg space and I was perched on the tank - fine for a quick Sunday ride or short commute, but anything more, no bloody way.
How tall are you? I'm 6'3'' and found the legroom plenty.
Only 6'2". Legs weren't cramped, but tapping them on things whenever I moved about was just plain annoying and I wanted a bike that would be comfy for longer periods.

Aside from the seat, what 1190 gripes did the 1290 fix for you?
The other big issue on the 1190 is the heat that comes up under your left leg. The 1290 has some extensive mods in this dept. Exhaust shield and a side plate to prevent the hot air coming up sorted out perfectly.
The seats on the 1290 are like chalk and cheese compared to the 1190 and the rear is very pillion friendly unlike on the 1190.
The bigger tank on the 1290is nice when you have 150+hpat your disposal wink
The 1290 has better wind protection around the lower leg area compared to the 1190 and the screen is a massive improvement. I found it difficult to not be buffeted on the 1190 but no issues on the 1290 and it's very close to the BMW GSA in terms of wind protection.
For what you are wanting I'd not recommend the 1190 but the 1290 might be right up your alley, especially with the nice extras like hill hold control and electronic suspension.
And it hustles. Really hustles. The GS is a wet lettuce by comparison with 125 bhp and the same weight. 2 Up abroad and you'll still hang with the big boys.
Bugger.

I'd narrowed it down to two bikes, now I might need to try the 1290.

Smiler1 and that old Scottish chap haven't helped either as perhaps I really do need to investigate the Multistrada.

I wasn't blown away by the Multistrafa enough to risk the horror stories which I've heard. I know every bike has issues but the Multi seems to have more than its fair share.

I've got an XR so I'm obviously biased, I love the thing, does everything I want it to with ease, it always puts a smile on my face and it's far more capeable than me so we've got room to grow together.

The GS will not disappoint, it's beautifully balanced, rides incredibly well and if you get passed the stigma, it's popular for a reason!

If I was looking for a cheaper alternative to the above 2, the Triumph Explorer is very very nearly as good, and is available for a much cheaper price tag.

IMO though, the Multi and XR are very different bikes to the GS and Explorer so you can't really compare them directly, as it completely depends what you want/like.

How have you found the XR vibrations to live with?

Ok cool. I will let you off seeing as you have a C3 Vette. Indy Pace Car is my favourite ever Vette.

If your background is mainly sportsbike oriented buying a Multistrada isn't a step back into boring cruiser/adventure type bikes, it's merely a side step.

A new house means that I will be constrained to 2 bikes. So the Tuono will go in April to make way for something else. Assuming the GF actually gets on with this biking lark. If she hates it then I can still play with hooligan bikes.

Scratch the XR. It's not roomy enough for comfortable 2-up riding unless you have a 30" waist.

Crosstourer.

It's a Honda - it won't go wrong!

Awesome V4 lump that sounds incredible.

Shaft drive.

If you want to be really lazy - DCT 'box.

You wouldn't have to spend anywhere near £14k for one.

Everything else by Ducati will get stolen in around 5 mins if you park it in London or a lot of other places - does the Multistrata also fall into this category?

If you want a comfy sports bike (150+ bhp) that will take the wife and a bit of luggage on a trip but still have masses of fun when you get there or when you are by yourself then the only choices I can see are the Multi, 1000sxr or the Tracer (if you are happy to drop some power).

I would discount the GS and Super T as they don’t meet the above criteria, the Triumph would be off my list also on reliability - my mate works for Leeds Ducati / Triumph and they are always coming back in to get fixed (much less reliable than the Multi).

The Caponord on paper looks to be a very good bike but in the flesh I am not sure I could live with the looks or the reliability issues.
Versys - only sat on it at the bike show but it didn’t shout I will be fun to ride fast – give it ago and see what you think.

I have no personal experience of BMW reliability or dealer service but given some of the posts on here (R1 Loon springs to mind and my mate had quite a few issues with his GS1200) it would make me think twice. Some feel the same about Ducati reliability and dealer service but mine has all be positive so far. I had a ZZR 1400 before the Multi and that needed far more looking after.
