Thought i'd contribute something on here for once...

Here's my latest toy. I've always loved early golfs, had a few Mk2 GTI's in my youth, but never a Mk1. The opportunity came up to buy this one from a relative, and I jumped at it (selling a couple of bikes to make room)...

It's a standard black 1982 8v. Non-Factory sunroof, installed in 1983. Never had paint, still pretty much rust free (plenty of waxoil still on underside), immaculate original interior. Dry stored for most of its 83,000 miles.

Immediate plans; fir new SPax PSX suspension that came with it, just ordered new wishbones and polybushes too. Cambelt (last one was 1000 miles ago, but about 4 years) and valve check, new oil, filter and gearbox oil, flush coolant, and new black silicon radiator hoses. Basically, improve consumables where possible. It also came with a set of G60 15" Wheels and tyres, brand new. Will see how it sits on new suspension before deciding to change these...

I know the grill isn;t original, and may change that. I will be getting rid of the beesting as soon as any bodywork is needed...

Excuse the boys in the photo, but they quite enjoy it. My oldest is fascinated by the wind-down windows...

Yep, that is amazing! If I had a garage I'd definitely have one of them in it.

I love Mark 1 GTI's. I had a couple back in the day, did the usual stuff (brake cross-linkage*, suspension).

These days you don't want to take it too far from standard, because good unmodified examples like yours will only go up in value.

  • This is a "must" on a Mark 1. As is beefing up the bulkhead where the clutch cable passes through.

Thanks guys. Will keep it as standard as possible; have now had value agreed with Insurance company too.

clutch cable through bulkhead appear to have already had a modification (rubber grommet to spread the load), and at present the brakes appear OK (for an old Mk1)!

Is it the 1.6 or 1.8 / Back in the day a pal had 2 ( one of each !) for a short while when he upgraded from 1.6 to a really nice 1.8.

Not an expert but I have heard say that the Mk1 1.8 was the quickest Golf due to the low weight. I have driven one and they are very responsive compared to the later Mk 2s and 3s. brakes were not quite as good though !

Really like the car pictured here; black is the only Golf Mk 1 colour to have as it is so iconic !

Exhaust is blowing from wither the exhaust manifold, or the downpipe (mid section and tail are all very recent).

Just got to decide if I replace with stainless 4-2-1 manifold, or keep to original parts. Then I will get onto the suspension (new wishbones and polybushes have arrived - polybushes for wishbones only...

looks cracking!!!!!!!

G60 steels, some 256mm or 280mm brakes anda mk2 GTI or Ibiza master cylinder would look great and address the mk1's rather awful brakes

Lovely to see one looking original, rather than been subjected to being "Scened", "Dubbed" or any other questionable modification cult.
