My local police force have taken to using a tractor to hide a speed camera in!
Aaaargh I'm nearly lost for words! This is parked up on a local biker route in open countryside!
Talk about sneaky!

This was today.

In other news 9/11 was carried out by the CIA, Elvis is alive and working in the chippy near me and the moon landings were fake.

Or you can stop believing everything that you read on Facebook. It's total BS

Didn't think cameras were allowed to be hidden? That's why all static ones are painted yellow etc.

They can be hidden, but rarely are. The yellow boxes are voluntary. However, this story is complete BS.

Wind yer neck in!
I know a lot of the posters on that Facebook post, it's real. The police have leased the tractor. They are also using a horse box. There are several marked cars parked further up the road where the camera operator radios to pull over the punters they have caught. Its close to where I ride.
Only needs signs on the particular road to be operated by civilian staff, police can use it anywhere as a special operation.

So, which chippy is it that Elvis works at Loon?

Prove it. There is not a single mention of this anywhere on the Internet. Humberside police are even generous enough to tell you the locations that their cameras are going to be in over any given period. Yet they're stealthily doing this and haven't publicised it at all. Nothing in the local press either.

It's complete BS.

I'm open to it being a one off type incident, but as Loon rightly points out that picture proves nothing.

The thing is if it was a one off, you wouldn't necessarily expect to find it documented on the internet either.

That is a nice tractor though. John Deere's are awesome.

I think the police go for an open top Massey F round here; a John Deere would stand out too much

I've never understood why they don't hide the cameras. Surely it would be more of a deterrent?

Is that a typo?

How can something be a deterrent if you don't see it?

It is a deterrent. In Switzerland they hide them. Often the first thing you know about having been caught is a letter in the post. If you know that there could be hidden cameras anywhere and everywhere then it starts to make you paranoid (of course speeding being treated worse than paedophilia in Switzerland doesn't help either).

We're not in Switzerland though.

In the UK they're expected to be on display, so you'd only know it was there after breaking the law and caught. So that isn't a deterrent.

Although they have a job to do, the UK police apparently recognise the importance of public relations, which is why I'm skeptical about all of this.

A big yellow box would deter me from speeding for the 50 or so meters it is present.

Hidden cameras along a 5 mile stretch of country lane would make drive the entire route slowly.

But unless there are signs warning you of hidden cameras, you wouldn't know they were there until after committing the offence. This may deter you for the next time but it doesn't stop the original offence being committed.

Do you ride within the speed limits everywhere you see those signs saying speed cameras operate in this area?

They do? & do they?

I wish they'd do the former, because then the later would automatically follow.
