OK I have a small budget of $250, and I want a helmet for my xvs, would you say http://www.elitehelmets.com/arai-vector-2-review/ or http://www.elitehelmets.com/hjc-cage-mc-1-review/?

Let me know what you think.

Cheers,
David

The best helmet is the best one that fits your head. as simple as that.

try one's on in your budget and that's fits you and bobs your uncle

Agree with the above the best one is one that does its job. An ill fitting lid with cool graphics is a bad idea. A friend runs a bike accessories shop and he often has stock left over from last season so can offer big discounts. This is common so you might get a premium lid if your ok with last year's graphic erc. But again go to a store try a load on an see what they will do you most places can offer a discount if you ask but suppliers have rules on size of discount. Mate who has the shop explained it all to me the mark up on goods is huge but it's set by the likes of Oxford etc. Once stuff.is out of season then they allow larger discounts

Indeed. I'm really pissed off as I got a Shoei Raid II free at work a little while ago, but since I've been training harder I've lost a little weight and it doesn't fit my head anymore. What I don't understand is how my usual lid fits better than ever (and was never over-tight).

The question here is how you define "best".

If you mean the safest then use the SHARP results as they are the only independent organisation to carry out comparative testing giving a consistent rating across different helmet make/models.

If best is the coolest graphics, then that is totally subjective and you’ll need to answer that one yourself.

If best is the greatest number of ventilation options, removable pads, internal sun visor or buckle type then let us know which of those is most/least important.

Remember to consider the noise levels of each helmet. Best should be the quietest you can afford as every helmet WILL result in hearing damage, even when you use ear plugs, it’s just a question of how much hearing damage and how quickly.

Finally, best absolutely must include fit to your head and only you can determine that. Remember that some helmets, particularly at the cheaper end of the market, will "give" as they are worn making what was previously a tight fit into something a lot looser. This is a good thing if the helmet starts too tight and a bad thing if the helmet was already a little loose.

I'd rather have a £200 helmet that fits perfectly than a £850 Rossi rep that doesn't....

if you just want to look cool like kids round my way you could always just wear it on top of your head like a baseball cap...cos it's street in it lol

Seriously though you could do worse than go to the NEC in NOV an see whats on offer great bargins to be found I got a Shoie Raid II few years ago loved it very comfy was gutted I could not get a shark lid I wanted to fit with my glasses but hey fit first fancy carbon stuff second.

Oh and AGV have gone on record as saying in terms of safty there budge lid is same as Rossi's lid.

Repeat all above about fitting and Sharp testing.

Two other points:

1) if you wear glasses, check carefully for fit on the forehead area, and ease of getting glasses on and off

2) check on your bike!!!!!!! Yes, I didnt when buying the Schuberth C3Pro... and its fine on my upright R1200R, but forget it on the K1300S. And laughable on the Panigale. Why? It comes down close to eyebrows, and simply blocks off too much view. So you must try on your bike too if it is in any way sporty with a lean-forward position.
