So, hypothetical situation that I thought might be quite interesting. Here is the scenario:

The DVLA announce, effective tomorrow, a person may only hold a licence to either; drive a car or ride a bike. No multiple categories or entitlements. This will be in effect permanently.

So, which do you choose? Cars or bikes?

To make the situation a cleaner affair; a bike licence encompasses all two wheel motor vehicles including 50/100/125cc (which is removed from the car licence entitlement) and a car licence covers trikes as well as cars.

With that in mind; what do you have and how does it impact you're day-to-day life? Do you have a few bikes for different situations or one that covers the bases. Similarly for cars.

And just to stop the obvious; you're current circumstances are still applicable. None of this "I'd sell my CBR600 and buy a Pagani Zonda to get my thrills"; if you can't afford it now, then it doesn't count.

So; the thrill and traffic-dodging ease of the bike or the comfort, practicality and versatility of the car?

Yes, I am fking bored.

Drive for me. I'd use the money from the bike, then save to get a Caterham/Westfield type car for knobbing about in.

I'd keep my bike licence and tell Mitzy to throw hers in for the car licence.

All angles covered

The bike is a toy, not a tool.

As much as I love my bike I would have to choose the car.

I chose ride, because although I have a battered old Fiesta that I love, I'd much rather be on a bike than driving any kind of car no matter how exotic. If only bikes were allowed, the UK would quickly become very well adjusted to the unique needs of the motorcyclist, gone would be those mid-corner drain covers, unexpected piles of gravel, etc, I can imagine the UK becoming a nirvana for all things two-wheeled. Innovative solutions to winter travel would surely be found, be that the complete cessation of road gritting and the introduction of spiked tyres or maybe something even more exciting

This, but then I'd convert my bikes to track bikes & stick a tow bar on the car tongue out

I'd go bike; but probably for the same reason that people would choose to drive.

Whilst the bike is a toy, I ride for pleasure rather than need. I drive because it is easier and lazier, not really for fun. I have a TVR currently, but since I've had the bike, I am selling it due to lack of use.

I'd rather have a bike all the time and take the highs & lows that come with that, than never ride again and miss that feeling.

I very highly doubt I'd ever afford a car that gives that same rush you get from a fairly powerful bike. Granted there are Westfields or Caterhams, but I don't find they give the same 'holy fk' you get from a bike.

Plus I'd make the missus drive.

I will keep my car license because I simply need a car in some circumstances where a bike wouldn't be approproate, like moving big stuff, go skiing, carry more than one people around, etc.
But such an hypothetical idotic rule would make me so angry I would simply ride illegaly my bike when I want, I would avoid cities but I know a number of roads deserted enpugh to take the risks like fines, bike seizure and even jail to have a ride sometime.

Bike for me. The only times I use the car at the moment is for bringing the shopping back and going away to visit friends and I don't fancy taking the bike, or when I need to carry stuff (to the tip, suitcases to the airport, etc).

Sure, sacrifices would have to be made, but if I owned several bikes I think I could do it. The only thing I've not worked out in this is what happens if/when I have kids, I bet these guys enjoy a heater!

If I lived in a warmer climate, or didn't have to commute to work all year round I would quite happily go for the bike. But as things are I'd drive and have a bike in the garage for trackdays.

I'd move somewhere that allowed me to do both as car is required for practicality but bike is where the heart is.

I'd go car, trailer my bike to trackdays, or to Europe.

I'm presuming these rules wouldn't stretch to Europe so trailer there and touring still an option.

Happy medium.

car. All credit to all year round commuter bikers but it simply isnt a viable form of only transport, with NO access to a car/van/whatever for most of us.

Of the two driving is still the first love.
The bike is always more of a toy and mainly fair weather only at that.

Bike for me. I was always a rider first, and never bothered with cars until late in my twenties ...the missus can always drive wink

Ride. I'd commit suicide doing my daily commute in a car. And the last time I drove a car was several months ago and I didn't need too, could have ridden my bike to work. That 1 or 2 days of commuting by car me realise how much I love being on a bike biggrin
