Hello PH bikers.

Not had a bike since 2002 but having just moved to near Royston and with the office being in Hatfield I managed to find a legitimate excuse to own a motorcycle again and went shopping. I bought a Bandit 1250S which I am delighted with especially since popping on a Yoshimura can which has resulted in lots of very agreeable pops and bangs on the overrun. Absolutely loving riding again and after a month, I'm feeling more confident again all round.

Anyway, for cars etc I am pretty clued up on consumable items but not at all for bikes. Can I please get some recommendations for brake pads? Won't be doing track days just road commuting (50 miles/day) and occasional rides out on the sunny weekends for pleasure. Disks are fine for now but pads want doing shortly.

Everyone has their favourites but you can't go wrong with EBC HH or SBS

Worth shopping around as prices vary massively - for example I've recently seen a full set of four SBS pads for £30 while lots of people will try to sell the same fitment of EBC HH for £50 a set.

For road riding ...

SBS sintered are fine ... cheap enough too.

Brembo SA's are also very good, but a bit more expensive.

OEM are always the best all round pad (if you're running OEM discs...)... The manufacturer put quite some time and effort into getting that setup right...

Just fitted these to the Ape and can't say I'm likingthem..

Fine with a proper pull but seem to offer very little bite at lower pressures.
Or it's me

Totally agree, if you do some research you should be able to find who the OEM supplier for your bike is, you can then buy the identical pads but for much less. Google the part number.

Brembos FTW, but they aren't the most long lasting...

Ebc or sbs whatever is cheapest. Just don't buy goldfren and you'll be fine.

EBay is cheapest for pads.

I'm not sure I would agree with you. Bikes are built to a specific budget. Lower spec'd bikes will get lower spec bits.

Also, if what you are saying about the time and effort put in by the manufacturers is true, why do so many of them get it wrong with tyres??

Brembos, buy them from the Italian sites as they tend to be far cheaper!

Which? smile

I've used the Brembo SA's and found them pretty good... I use the SC's now though as they give better bite, but more suited to track and road.

OEM isn't always best and I think pads and tyres are one of the biggest improvements you can make.

Its also worth considering that the manufacturers don't have their own factory making all the parts - a high proportion will come from third parties. If you can find out who these are you'll save a lot in not paying for a manufacturer branded box (appreciate that this may sill come under your OEM label).

On the road on a bandit.

Maybe I'm a poof but I rarely use my brakes on the road when making progress.

Yes, yes in an emergency argument. But ebc hh are bloody good road pads.

There, I fixed it...

I was just quoting what was determined in PB (or perhaps it was SB) many years ago, and concurs with my own findings

I've got a PB subscription now and pretty much the first thing the do with long term bikes is swap the pads and they always say how much better the brake are after.

Game has moved on.

Agreed. The Honda OE pads are very good ... but the Brembo's and SBS RS pads have been in another league.

My hate for EBC pads on here is well documented, so I won't go into those. wink

Sorry, meant the SBS Sintered. There were no road pads available so had to go for these and they seem a bit Meh. But I've never got on with SBS. Had them in the Duc years ago and threw them away after a day.

Agree, the RS series do need a good pull but are very effective. I've not tried the sintered versions though... I've stuck with the Brembo's for the extra £10-£15 they cost me over the SBS.
