The 1190 is a great bike but not in the same league as the Multi for road use.
I had an 1190A for a couple of years but I got that specifically for its off road ability and not trusting a Ducati in the arse end of Africa.
Don't regret it at all but will be getting the MS next for daily use as I have the best independent Ducati service guy in the country around the corner from me.
The 1190 certainly goes well but the MS tops it at pretty much everything. That being said, the 1190 is pretty robust in the engine dept and only small items seem to need attention. Early model airboxes and head stocks spring to mind.
Maybe look at the KTM 1290 SA rather than the 1190. Much improved and pretty bloody impressive all round

It's pretty large – I'm 6'3" and don't fully flat foot it and it takes a good swing to get my leg over it. Results in a lovely high riding position and you can see over way more stuff than on a sports bike, obviously.

I test rode the 1290SA and it's a better long distance bike than the MTS – not just cos of the bigger tank. Its suspension is plusher and it has more torque (it's hilarious - every overtake has the front wheel going very much not on the road) but for me it was just too much money. Especially considering I got this MTS for less than £9k and the nearest 1290 was more like £14k. It's about the only bike I'd consider to replace the Multistrada, but they'll have to lose another £5k. Being a KTM that shouldn't be long…

I admit I haven't ridden a 1190 but I have ridden a 1290 Adventure and have to say that bike was a beast! Heated seats and clever lean sensitive lights and ABS. From memory it costs near the same as a new MTS1200.

The 1190 to me seems more robust and with 150bhp not far off in terms of on paper performance of the MTS1200. Also the KTM you can buy a newer model for less then the MTS. Kind of sways me a little too.

I think I have been put of by the reported issues with a Ducati vs the perceived robustness of the KTM. However will I ever venture of the road? With the KTM I may give it a go. (he says)

I am silly tart and I'll admit that. I'll probably be buying a Aprillia Tuono 1100 V4. However saying that I am sure I am due a hypermotard for the Autumn as the reality is I don't ever get the chance to tour and live in London.

It was a good few years back now but my 748 would lose all electrical power at random, first time stranding me on an unlit B road near me. Dealer couldn't replicate the fault but it would do it every now and then. Got used to a narcoleptic bike and it only slightly dampened my love for Dukes.

Went for a new rear tyre today before my tour in a fortnight. Tyre place had to saw my exhaust end can off to get the rear wheel out hehe

The exhaust end can has to come off to get the rear wheel out but the bolt holding it on was utterly seized and no amount of oxyacetylene could get it off. +£16 to labour bill.

I love this bike.

Its a simple job to get the can off

take the black heat shield off - 3 bolts
slacken the end can clamp - 1 bolt don’t remove
twist can 10 degrees to get it past a tab and pull

putting it back on just remember to put copper slip on the bolts and don’t tighten the clamp until you but the 3 bolts in the heat shield other wise you wont be able to get it lined up.

I can guess which bit has been missed out by whoever worked on your bike smile
